Synopsis

Some men are renowned in history on account of the extraordinary powers and capacities which they exhibited in the course of their career, or the intrinsic greatness of the deeds which they performed. Others, without having really achieved any thing in itself very great or wonderful, have become widely known to mankind by reason of the vast consequences which, in the subsequent course of events, resulted from their doings. Men of this latter class are conspicuous rather than great. From among thousands of other men equally exalted in character with themselves, they are brought out prominently to the notice of mankind only in consequence of the strong light reflected, by great events subsequently occurring, back upon the position where they happened to stand.
The celebrity of Romulus seems to be of this latter kind. He founded a city. A thousand other men have founded cities; and in doing their work have evinced perhaps as much courage, sagacity, and mental power as Romulus displayed. The city of Romulus, however, became in the end the queen and mistress of the world. It rose to so exalted a position of influence and power, and retained its ascendency so long, that now for twenty centuries every civilized nation in the western world have felt a strong interest in every thing pertaining to its history, and have been accustomed to look back with special curiosity to the circumstances of its origin. In consequence of this it has happened that though Romulus, in his actual day, performed no very great exploits, and enjoyed no pre-eminence above the thousand other half-savage chieftains of his class, whose names have been long forgotten, and very probably while he lived never dreamed of any extended fame, yet so brilliant is the illumination which the subsequent events of history have shed upon his position and his doings, that his name and the incidents of his life have been brought out very conspicuously to view, and attract very strongly the attention of mankind.

"Striking, elegant." – Publishers Weekly, ★ STARRED Review
An activist priest provides sanctuary for an encampment of unhoused people in her churchyard
The housing crisis plaguing major urban centres has sent countless people into the streets. In spring 2022, some of them found their way to the yard beside the Anglican church in Toronto’s Kensington Market, where Maggie Helwig is the priest. They pitched tents, formed an encampment, and settled in. Known as an outspoken social justice activist, Helwig has spent the last three years getting to know the residents and fighting tooth and nail to allow them to stay, battling various authorities that want to clear the yard and keep the results of the housing crisis out of sight and out of mind.
Encampment tells the story of Helwig’s life-long activism as preparation for her fight to keep her churchyard open to people needing a home. More importantly, it introduces us to the Artist, to Jeff, and to Robin: their lives, their challenges, their humanity. It confronts our society’s callousness in allowing so many to go unhoused and demands, by bringing their stories to the fore, that we begin to respond with compassion and grace.

Embark on a profound journey through the struggles and revelations of one of Christianity's most influential figures with Confessions by Augustine of Hippo. This masterful autobiography transcends the mere recounting of Augustine's early life of sin and his pivotal conversion to Christianity, offering readers a timeless meditation on the human condition, the power of faith, and the quest for understanding and truth.
Confessions stands as a cornerstone in Western literature and theological thought, profoundly impacting not just Christian theology but also philosophy and the broader human search for meaning. Written with unparalleled eloquence, Augustine's introspective exploration of his own life serves as a mirror reflecting universal truths about the trials and transformations that define the human experience.
Through his candid narrative, Augustine embarks on a philosophical inquiry into memory, time, and the nature of God, making Confessions not just a tale of personal redemption but also a compelling discourse on the essence of existence itself. This book invites readers into a deep contemplation of their own spiritual journey, encouraging a reflective exploration of faith, the complexities of the human psyche, and the pursuit of inner peace.
Discover why luminaries across centuries have drawn inspiration from Augustine's insights. Confessions promises not just a story of conversion but a profound engagement with the mysteries of life—a literary and spiritual odyssey that continues to resonate with readers seeking wisdom and solace in their own lives.

Shortlisted: Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature

Coming from a working-class background, Paul Besley knew the worst and best of life in a Yorkshire steel town. He had always been drawn to the solitude of the hills, but that life nearly ended when a fall while hillwalking left him critically injured and alone in the mountains of the Lake District. Paul was found and brought to safety by a mountain rescue team. This was the trigger for him to transform his life, first by joining his local team, then by finding Scout, his very own Border collie puppy, and training him to become a mountain rescue search dog.

In The Search, Paul writes with humour and honesty as we follow him and Scout through their complex training, with searches and rescue incidents sometimes tragic and often funny. Paul’s demons and headstrong characters threaten to derail them, until his past finally catches up with him and his life inescapably unravels. It’s up to Scout to keep an eye on him now as Paul tries to build the best life he can.
