    1. The Labor Day Run
For the Hell’s Angels, the Labor Day Run was their crowning event—an annual spectacle of chaos and hedonism. It was a time for drinking, fighting, unrestrained indulgence, and drugs. The event could attract anywhere from a couple hundred to a thousand bikers, all coming together for a weekend of pure debauchery. It wasn’t uncommon for the festivities to spiral out of control with violence, reckless behavior, and, in some cases, random fornication.
    2. The Hell's Angels Emblem
The Hell’s Angels are instantly recognizable by their iconic emblem: a winged skull wearing a motorcycle helmet. This patch, often sewn onto the back of a sleeveless denim jacket, is a mark of belonging and defiance. Members typically sport long, wild hair and thick beards, embracing a rugged, untamed look. As a statement of both style and practicality, their belts are sometimes made from motorbike chains—useful not only as accessories but also as makeshift weapons when necessary.
    3. Oakland: The Heart of the Hell's Angels
By 1965, Oakland had firmly established itself as the epicenter of the Hell’s Angels, with the city acting as a base for their growing empire. However, tensions were rising when the Diablos, a rival gang, made a move to challenge the Angels. The conflict escalated after a lone Angel was brutally attacked by the Diablos, prompting the Hell’s Angels to take matters into their own hands. In a swift act of retaliation, the Angels hunted down and beat each member of the Diablo gang, ultimately forcing them to disband.

Jane Ellen Harrison (1850-1928) is the most famous female Classicist in history, the author of books that revolutionized our understanding of Greek culture and religion. A star in the British academic world, she became the quintessential Cambridge woman—as Virginia Woolf suggested when, in A Room of One's Own, she claims to have glimpsed Harrison's ghost in the college gardens.

This lively and innovative portrayal of a fascinating woman raises the question of who wins (and how) in the competition for academic fame. Mary Beard captures Harrison's ability to create her own image. And she contrasts her story with that of Eugénie Sellers Strong, a younger contemporary and onetime intimate, the author of major work on Roman art, and once a glittering figure at the British School in Rome—but who lost the race for renown. The setting for the story of Harrison's career is Classical scholarship in this period—its internal arguments and allegiances and especially the influence of the anthropological strain most strikingly exemplified by Sir James Frazer. Questioning the common criteria for identifying intellectual "influence" and "movements," Beard exposes the mythology that is embedded in the history of Classics. At the same time she provides a vivid picture of a sparkling intellectual scene. The Invention of Jane Harrison offers shrewd history and undiluted fun.

‘I’ve spent the majority of my life fighting for the rights of Traditional Owners. This has put me in the firing line. But I chose this job, I chose this political path. My family did not.’ – Wayne Bergmann
It’s Broome, 2010. Nyikina man Wayne Bergmann has just received a death threat. His wife has watched a friend cross the road to avoid speaking with her. His children are subject to intense schoolyard bullying. Bergmann, a boilermaker by trade, and lawyer, is chief executive of the Kimberley Land Council during the controversial James Price Point gas hub negotiations. It’s an event that will tear the Broome community apart. Wayne’s story starts on Nyikina country and encompasses backbreaking station work, buried treasure, a Swedish bone thief and traditional magic love songs. His is an electrifying tale of resilience, determination and optimism, which shows what it takes to be an Aboriginal person walking in two cultures in a country where racism runs deep.
