Synopsis

Jackie Kearney, MasterChef UK finalist in 2011, explores the nutritional benefits of Asian street food with 85 healthy vegan recipes.
Jackie Kearney has brought new life to healthy, plant-based cooking in this exciting follow-up to her award-winning Vegan Street Food. The book is inspired by the growing wellness culture in Asia as well as the glorious range of street food – from street hawkers, roadside cafés, food halls and more – which brings people from all walks of life together. Jackie takes us on a delicious journey from India to Indonesia, via Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia, enjoying classic dishes and crowd-pleasers we might already be familiar with, such as 'Massaman Curry in a Hurry', 'Faster Laksa' and 'Paradise Bounty Bars', all made a little healthier. The book also features many less well known regional specialities, such as 'Banh Trang Nuong' (Vietnamese rice paper pizza), 'Pepes Tahu' (Javanese tofu in banana leaves) and 'Khao Sen' (Thai tomato-braised rice noodles with porcini mushrooms). Combined with stories and anecdotes from the road, family photos and fascinating local information that transport the reader to the places and foods they fell in love with, this exciting book celebrates the best of vegan street food, whilst harnessing the most nutritious produce and ingredients.

Diabetic symptoms are not always easy to identify. Type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes, prediabetes, and gestational diabetes, all stem from the same cause but the medical community places a subcategory to help them take into consideration other age-related issues that might be present. All these signs of diabetes can be found in this book, and explain the reasons why they are happening, so you can better understand how to respond to this diagnosis. Basically, the pancreas has lost the ability to convert sugars into energy causing the diabetic to often start taking insulin shots.

Diabetes is a very serious disease that can bring a lifetime of medical issues, including death, so understanding how it got started, how to prevent it, and in some cases reverse it, is vital if you have been diagnosed. Neuropathy, cardio-vascular issues, blindness, and sores that won't heal can often be corrected providing you have the correct information and learn how to reverse existing symptoms. However, under no circumstances should this book be used to replace our doctor's advice. Everyone is unique, and he will have more information about your personal condition than I do, so learn how to respond to diabetes, and once your chemistry is back in balance, reverse symptoms, and let your doctor decide if it is time to discontinue any treatments.

Start your days off right with taste-tempting delights from the author of Sweety Pies and Sweets: Soul Food Desserts and Memories.   From donuts to crumb cakes to sweet rolls, this cookbook collects the kind of treats that evoke feelings of warmth and comfort like only good, old-fashioned breakfast food can.   Author Patty Pinner has been collecting breakfast recipes for as long as she can remember. She comes from a long line of breakfast bakers, and many of the recipes in this book have been passed down from the “Greats” —great-grannies and -aunties—as well as cousins and other influential women in Pinner’s life. To pore through these recipes, and then to bake them at home, evokes in Pinner memories of the many women who created them. Pinner includes charming, often comical stories about her life and family throughout the cookbook.   With generations-old recipes that range from the familiar (Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes) to the fun (Pineapple Upside Down Biscuits), Sweet Mornings is a reliable, well-tested addition to any kitchen. These recipes are ideal for slow weekend mornings and afternoons when you want to lure family and friends to the table with the intoxicating aroma of a homemade sweet treat baking in the oven.   As the author’s mother used to say, the only thing that differentiates breakfast from dinner is the time of day. Where does it say you can’t have a little sugar in the morning?   “Pinner shares these succulent sentiments amongst these pages from women who cooked meals that could make modern men cry . . . a delightful read that feels like home.” —Cuisine Noir

One of the great science and health revelations of our time is the danger posed by meat-eating. Every day, it seems, we are warned about the harm producing and consuming meat can do to the environment and our bodies. Many of us have tried to limit how much meat we consume, and many of us have tried to give it up altogether. But it is not easy to resist the smoky, cured, barbecued, and fried delights that tempt us. What makes us crave animal protein, and what makes it so hard to give up? And if consuming meat is truly unhealthy for human beings, why didn't evolution turn us all into vegetarians in the first place? In Meathooked, science writer Marta Zaraska explores what she calls the "meat puzzle": our love of meat, despite its harmful effects. Zaraska takes us on a witty tour of meat cultures around the word, stopping in India's unusual steakhouses, animal sacrifices at temples in Benin, and labs in the Netherlands that grow meat in petri dishes. From the power of evolution to the influence of the meat lobby, and from our genetic makeup to the traditions of our foremothers, she reveals the interplay of forces that keep us hooked on animal protein.
