Synopsis

This edition includes the following editor's analysis: Jack London, an infinite passion for adventure that drove all his work

First published in 1913, “The Night-Born” is a collection of ten short stories by American author Jack London with no apparent genre connection to place them in a set. Each story collected in "The Night-Born", including the title story, is unique and thought-provoking as they deal with various themes and issues, all more or less bizarre.

The collection includes, among others, War, in which a cavalry scout moves across the landscape as the horrors of war take place before his eyes and in his head and The Mexican, in which a mysterious young man joins a band of revolutionaries fighting in Los Angeles with the task of finding enough money to help the fighting in Mexico.

THIS IS A COLLECTION OF RIVER CITY SHORT STORIES, featuring many of the characters you know from the series. I've included it in the series because many important events occur in (or make better sense after reading) these stories. However, it is not absolutely essential that you read these stories in order to follow the novels. If you wish to skip ahead to the next full novel, please do. If you choose not to, I believe your series experience will be richer.
This River City collection features stories about:
    *A frustrated crime scene cleaner
*An off duty cop in a jam
    * A patrol officer who believes in a strange fate
*A holier-than-thou Internal Affairs whose world gets turned upside down
Plus those that are criminally insane, surrounded by sadness or just trying to get by in a tough world. These are the many and varied characters of River City, brought to life in 17 short stories that fill in gaps and moments within the River City series that the novels don't explore.

The Cloak or the Overcoat as in some translations, is a famous story by Ukrainian-born Russian author Nikolai Gogol, published in 1842. The story and its author have had great influence on Russian literature, as expressed in a quote attributed to Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'." It is pointed to as the start of the realistic style of writing.

Agatha Christie once again demonstrates her mastery of the short form mystery with Parker Pyne Investigates—short stories of crime and detection featuring Parker Pyne, certainly one of the most unconventional private investigators ever to pursue a hot lead.
Mrs. Packington felt alone, helpless and utterly forlorn. But her life changed when she stumbled upon an advertisement in the Times that read: "Are you happy? If not, consult Mr. Parker Pyne."
Equally adept at putting together the fragments of a murder mystery or the pieces of a broken marriage, Mr. Parker Pyne is possibly the world's most unconventional private investigator. Armed with just his intuitive knowledge of human nature, he is an Englishman abroad, traveling the globe to solve and undo crime and misdemeanor.

From Edgar Allan Poe—the master of the short story and lyric poem—comes this rare treasury of classics. The outstanding works "A Descent into the Maelstrom," "Annabelle Lee," "Eldorado," "The Bells," and "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall," illustrate Poe's meticulous sense of construction, with signature themes of romance and melancholy that characterized his short and troubled life. Short stories such as "MS. Found in a Bottle," "Some Words with a Mummy," "A Tale of the Ragged Mountains," and "The Thousand and Second Tale of Scheherazade" typify Poe's original literary style—one that is still copied in today's detective stories and gothic tales. This worthy collection, dramatized by Oscar-winning actor Paul Scofield, will enthrall all enthusiasts of Poe's work.
