First published in 1914, "The Mutiny of the Elsinore" is a maritime adventure novel by American author Jack London partially based on his voyage around Cape Horn on the Dirigo in 1912. The novel has been adapted into films three times.

"The Mutiny of the Elsinore" narrates the story of John Pathurst, a rich and famous author suffering from depression and ennui who has lost his taste for life. New York, fame, women, and the arts have all become tedious. Searching for excitement, he books passage on a cargo vessel sailing from Baltimore to Seattle on a route that travels around the treacherous Cape Horn. Pathurst encounters more than he ever expected in rough seas, turbulent storms, and a mutinous crew. His epic struggles aboard the sailing ship Elsinore have given him a new love for life, but will he survive to profit from it?

E F Benson

Edward Frederic Benson was born in Berkshire, England on 24th July 1867. 
Educated at Marlborough and Kings College Cambridge he began his career as a writer at an early age and was published whilst still studying. 
Benson was also a gifted athlete and represented his country at figure skating. 
His career was prodigious and widely acknowledged.  Perhaps he is best known for his collection of novels about ‘Mapp & Lucia’ which have proved very popular throughout the decades.   
Benson was also well regarded as a writer of ghost stories—‘spook stories’ in the then vernacular—as well as biographies.  His ghost and supernatural fiction covered a range of subjects but all were exceptionally well-written, drenched in atmosphere, riven with chills and have stood the test of popularity over the decades as testament to his literary talents.  
Benson was never married and practised his homosexuality discreetly. 
E F Benson died on 29th February 1940 at University College Hospital, London of throat cancer.  He was 72.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft is among the greatest American masters of fantasy and the supernatural.  
Born in 1890, a native of Providence, Rhode Island, his health was uncertain from childhood and he led a sheltered early life. His semi-invalidism enabled him to read omnivorously, and as a shy imaginative child he began to invent what would in his adult life become a whole macabre fantastic world of his own, peopled by creatures out of his own weird imagination.

He set many of his stories around the imaginary town of Arkham, and invented an entire mythology of his own, its core being the demoniac cult of Cthulhu, based on the lore or legend that the world was at one time inhabited by another race who, in practising black magic, lost their foothold or were expelled, yet live on outside, ever ready to take possession of this earth again. 
Since his early death in 1937 his stories have continued to attract attention and praise from an ever-growing audience.
