Beschreibung

"There are some melodies that should never be played, and some spirits that should never be awakened."

Young Sir John Maltravers is a man of refinement, wealth, and deep musical talent. But his life takes a dark turn during his time at Oxford when he discovers a hidden 1704 Stradivarius violin tucked away in a secret compartment in his rooms. Along with the instrument, he finds a mysterious piece of music—a Gagliarda by the composer Pogliari. As John becomes increasingly obsessed with the violin's otherworldly tone, he begins to change, falling under the influence of the ghost of Adrian Temple, a debauched ancestor who once owned the instrument. From the halls of England to the sun-drenched, sinister villas of Naples, John descends into a spiral of moral decay and supernatural terror.

The Power of the Forbidden: Falkner explores the idea that art is not always benign. The Gagliarda acts as a ritualistic bridge, allowing the spirit of the hedonistic Adrian Temple to possess the living. The novel serves as a chilling warning about the dangers of aestheticism when it is divorced from morality.

A Masterclass in Atmosphere: While Moonfleet is a story of action, The Lost Stradivarius is a story of mood. Falkner uses the imagery of flickering candles, dusty manuscripts, and the "thin, piping" sound of the violin to create a sense of mounting dread. It is a classic "ghost story" in the tradition of M.R. James, where the horror is suggested as much as it is shown.

Ancestral Curses and Secret Lives: As John's family watches him wither away, they uncover the secret history of Adrian Temple—a man who sought forbidden knowledge and pagan mysteries. The novel builds to a heart-stopping climax where the past literally reaches out to claim the present.

Listen to the music of the shadows. Purchase "The Lost Stradivarius" today and discover the price of perfection.

A Kappa is a Japanese water spirit, often depicted as a small, humanoid creature with a turtle-like shell and mischievous intent.
    Sometimes deadly intent.
Jennifer Levy didn’t believe in them though. Kappas were a stupid myth her cousin used to frighten her with as a kid; a story she hadn’t thought about in years. Not until she shared the legends with a young boy named Dale Oberman.
Not long after, Dale went missing, and two teens that Jennifer argued with were brutally violated by an unknown assailant at a lake party.
These events point to Jen as a suspect.
When a cucumber—a kappa’s favorite food—is found at a new crime scene, Jen realizes the mystery is supernatural and the myth of the kappa may be real. If not, then someone knows about her story time with Dale and is trying to frame her.
Join Jen and her new pal Shaggy as they face the Kappa in a bizarre novelette of friendship & revenge.
"Mendes knows how to weave a mystery" - Joseph Sale, author of Dark Hilarity
"Nikki Noir is a sultry new voice in erotic horror." - Kristopher Triana, Splatterpunk-Award winning author of Toxic Love

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood is a haunting masterpiece of early supernatural fiction, blending psychological horror with the eerie majesty of nature. Set along the remote banks of the Danube River, the novella follows two travelers whose peaceful canoe journey turns into a terrifying encounter with unseen forces lurking in the marshlands. As the willows seem to shift and whisper with unnatural intent, the boundary between reality and another dimension begins to dissolve. Atmospheric, suspenseful, and deeply unsettling, this story is a foundational work of weird fiction that profoundly influenced authors like H.P. Lovecraft.

Mira is a desperate young woman, hired by a wealthy single mother to tutor her lonesome son, Yuchan. But Mira is not who she presents herself to be; she is haunted by the death of her own family and motivated by the dark pulse of vengeance. Yuchan was cruel to Mira’s mother. A kind of cruelty she can’t ever forgive.   And then there is Jiwon, the boy’s mother, a bad mother, Mira thinks—or so Jiwon tells herself she must not be.   But as Mira spends more time in the family’s sprawling home, she begins to suspect Yuchan is not the culprit she’s after. Someone else in the family has been pulling the strings. Someone with a deviant plan she can’t begin to imagine.   Structured around four different letters and journal entries: Mira's, Jiwon's reply, Yuchan's younger brother's diary entry and, finally, Mira's own written recollection. Each new section brings us deeper into a web of cruelty, consequence, and closer to the truth.

Lady Eleanor Furneaux Smith was born in Birkenhead, Merseyside in England on the 7th August 1902 into a privileged family steeped in titles and politics.

Part of her education was at Miss Douglas's school at Queen's Gate. Here she met and befriended several other young women that the British tabloid press would later call the ‘Bright Young Things’, a group of bohemian young aristocrats and socialites in 1920s London.

Smith's paternal great-grandmother, was said to have been a Gypsy, and this sparked an early and life-long interest with the Romani people, she even went so far as to learn to read and speak the language, which she called ‘musical and broken.’

Her life was full of adventure and mishaps. A mistaken encounter with a man she thought could help her into the film business turned out to threats of marriage and death from a man wanted for the murder of his father. She was even arrested twice. Once for listing her career as a journalist and another, in Rome, for walking around in a sleeveless dress.

Smith began her career writing society gossip columns for various newspapers but later received an offer to write for the newly-formed Great Carmo Circus, with which she travelled for several years and was the source material for many of her books.

Her first novel, ‘Red Wagon’, was published when she was 28 and it was an immediate bestseller. A prolific writer several of her works were also adapted for films.

Smith also wrote ghost stories and others flavoured with evil. Her support for the Conservative party may be forgiven but her attributed quote to be a ‘warm adherent of General Franco’ less so.

Lady Eleanor Furneaux Smith died on the 20th October 1945 in Westminster after a long illness. She was 43.
