Beschreibung

In "The History of Duelling," J. G. Millingen provides a meticulously researched examination of the cultural and historical practices surrounding dueling from antiquity to the 19th century. Millingen employs a narrative style rich with detail, combining historical records, anecdotal evidence, and personal reflections that illuminate the motivations behind this contentious practice. The book serves as a critical analysis of the social and moral implications of dueling, while also addressing its legal ramifications and the irrefutable codes of honor that dictated the lives of men across Europe. Millingen's work stands as both a scholarly account and a compelling narrative, reflecting the ongoing tensions between honor and societal norms in various contexts. J. G. Millingen, an esteemed physician and historian, draws from his profound knowledge of social customs and human behavior to navigate the labyrinthine world of dueling. His insights as a member of the educated elite of the time, coupled with his personal interest in moral philosophy, fuel this exploration of an institution that defined masculinity and honor. Millingen's background allows him to approach the subject with both intellectual rigor and an engaging narrative flair, making his work both authoritative and accessible. "The History of Duelling" is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersections of honor, history, and culture. Millingen deftly dissects the multifaceted nature of dueling, making this book an indispensable resource for historians, sociologists, and enthusiasts of social customs alike. Why are we so divided today? Paradoxically, Howard Ross, author of Everyday Bias, says it's our compulsion to belong to a group--something hardwired into us-- that ends up making us deeply connected with some, yet deeply divided from others. Ross shows how we can overcome this growing tribalism.

We are living in a world of almost unparalleled separation. People are no longer disagreeing, but are instead disavowing each other's rights to an opinion. What is driving this polarization, and how can we overcome it? Howard Ross says that ironically it's our profound need to belong. He delves deeply into the powerful psychological, neurological, and biological forces that drive us to want to identify so strongly with a group we're sometimes even willing to sacrifice our individual identity.
Drawing on his decades of leadership in the diversity and inclusion field, Ross probes the depth and impact of this growing tribalism, the role social media plays in exacerbating it, the ways it impacts every aspect of the daily lives, and how to combat it. Readers will gain tools for exploring contentious dialogue in healthier ways and guidelines for breaking down barriers and building bridges across difference, and organizations and institutions will be able to develop approaches that can open dialogue and encourage mutual understanding.

During World War I, German U-boats operated solo except on one occasion. Initially, the British and nations supplying England with food and materiel scattered vessels singly across the ocean, making them vulnerable to the lone submarines. However, widespread late war re-adoption of the convoy system tipped the odds in the surface ships' favor, as one U-boat skipper described: “The oceans at once became bare and empty; for long periods at a time the U-boats, operating individually, would see nothing at all; and then suddenly up would loom a huge concourse of ships, thirty or fifty or more of them, surrounded by a strong escort of warships of all types.”
World War I proved the value of submarines, ensuring their widespread employment in the next conflict, and one critical innovation in World War II's Atlantic U-boat operations consisted of wolf-pack tactics, in which Admiral Karl Dönitz put great faith: “The greater the number of U-boats that could be brought simultaneously into the attack, the more favorable would become the opportunities offered to each individual attacker.
Meanwhile, submarines exercised a decisive impact on the outcome of the Pacific Theater in World War II. The U.S. submarine fleet, largely though not exclusively under the overall command of Vice Admiral Charles Lockwood, strangled the supply lines and shipping traffic of the Empire of Japan. Their commerce raiding crippled both Japan's ability to keep its frontline units supplied and to manufacture the weapons, vessels, and vehicles needed to successfully carry on the struggle. Though constituting only 1.6% of the total U.S. Navy’s tonnage in the Pacific, the submarine fleet inflicted massive losses on the Imperial Japanese Navy and Japan's crucial merchant marine. Submarines sank 55% of the merchant shipping lost, or approximately 1,300 vessels
