Beschreibung

The possible existence of the Yeti, Sasquatch, and other Abominable Snowman forms has long been a point of conjecture among travelers, naturalists, and scientists. While most of this evidence is circumstantial and inconclusive as yet, it provides a tantalizing mystery filled with enough interest and promise to warrant the attention of both serious students and casual readers. In this book, Ivan T. Sanderson summarizes current world evidence regarding ABSMs (abominable snowmen), drawing from records and reports that are world-wide in scope and cover a broad period of time. For completeness he discusses all prevailing views, both pro and con, ranging from highly plausible accounts to reports that border on the absurd. The result is as thorough an evaluation of all known ABSM sightings as could possibly be compiled at this time.

The early 20th century marked a turning point in physics, as classical mechanics, which had been the foundation of scientific thought for centuries, began to show limitations in explaining certain phenomena. Isaac Newton’s laws of motion and gravitation had provided an elegant and highly successful framework for understanding the physical world, but as experimental techniques improved, inconsistencies began to emerge. The most significant of these was the behavior of light and electromagnetism, which did not conform to Newtonian mechanics. This contradiction laid the groundwork for one of the most revolutionary theories in science—Einstein’s theory of relativity.
At the heart of the problem was the nature of light. Classical physics assumed that waves needed a medium to propagate, much like sound waves require air or water waves need a surface. This led scientists to propose the existence of an invisible substance known as the luminiferous ether, which was thought to permeate space and serve as the medium for electromagnetic waves. However, experimental efforts to detect the ether, most notably the Michelson-Morley experiment in 1887, failed to find any evidence of its existence. This posed a major challenge to classical mechanics, as it suggested that light did not require a medium and always traveled at the same speed, regardless of the observer’s motion.

Do you like scary movies? Have you ever wondered why?

In Nightmare Fuel, Nina Nesseth explores the strange and often unexpected science of fear through the lenses of psychology and physiology. How do horror films get under our skin? And why do we keep coming back for more?

Horror films promise an experience: fear. But how exactly do filmmakers pull this off? The truth is, there's more to it than just loud noises and creepy images.

With the affection of a true horror fan and the critical analysis of a scientist, Nesseth explains how audiences engage horror with both their brains and bodies, and teases apart the elements that make horror films tick. Nightmare Fuel covers everything from jump scares to creature features, serial killers to the undead, and the fears that stick around to those that fade over time.

With in-depth discussions and spotlight features of some of horror's most popular films—from classics like The Exorcist to modern hits like Hereditary—and interviews with directors, film editors, composers, and horror academics, Nightmare Fuel is a deep dive into the science of fear, a celebration of the genre, and a survival guide for going to bed after the credits roll.
