Synopsis

Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov is a celebrated masterpiece of Russian literature that offers a profound and often humorous exploration of human nature, society, and the struggle between dreams and action. First published in 1859, the novel presents one of the most memorable characters in literary history and provides a powerful reflection on the social and cultural atmosphere of nineteenth-century Russia.

The story centers on Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, a gentle and thoughtful nobleman who spends most of his days lying on a sofa in his apartment, lost in reflection and imagination. Though intelligent and kind-hearted, Oblomov finds himself unable to take meaningful action in his life. Simple tasks—such as answering letters, managing his estate, or making decisions about his future—become overwhelming challenges.

Through Oblomov's daily routines and inner thoughts, Ivan Goncharov paints a vivid portrait of a man caught between comfort and ambition. Oblomov dreams of a peaceful life filled with warmth, friendship, and simplicity, yet he struggles to move beyond his habits of procrastination and inactivity. His condition becomes so distinctive that it gives rise to the term "Oblomovism," symbolizing a state of apathy, indecision, and resistance to change.

The novel introduces several characters who attempt to influence Oblomov's life, including his energetic and practical friend Andrei Stolz, who represents discipline, progress, and modern values. Stolz repeatedly encourages Oblomov to take control of his life and embrace responsibility. At the same time, Oblomov experiences a brief awakening through a relationship that inspires hope for transformation and renewal.

Beyond the personal story of its central character, Oblomov offers a thoughtful commentary on the social structure and cultural attitudes of the Russian aristocracy during a time of transition. Goncharov examines themes such as lethargy, social change, personal responsibility, idealism, and the tension between tradition and progress.

Written with warmth, irony, and psychological depth, the novel combines gentle satire with deep empathy for its characters. Goncharov's rich storytelling invites readers to reflect on the universal challenge of turning aspirations into action and confronting the habits that shape our lives.

Both humorous and deeply philosophical, Oblomov remains a timeless exploration of human inertia and the search for purpose. It continues to resonate with readers around the world as a powerful literary study of the human condition and the delicate balance between dreaming and doing.

The tasks are simple. Everett Mulligan is there to collect the body. Kyle Bowman is there to clean up the scene. Easy peasy. Get in, get out, get gone.
But Everett, for all he can be on another planet with fourteen tabs open in his brain, isn’t stupid like the cops think he is. Something about this death scene isn’t sitting right, and he’s going to figure it out. Bonus? He gets to team up with the adorkable crime-scene cleanup guy to solve the mystery.
Kyle, ever the thorough and detail-oriented cleaner, can’t ignore the scene’s irregularities either. He also can’t ignore the seriously attractive himbo from the mortuary who insists they should work together to solve what the cops insist isn’t a crime. Especially when that himbo is also enamored with Kyle’s cats and fiercely determined to make friends with his cranky piranha, Steve.
There’s a reason this death isn’t being treated as a homicide, though, and there are people who are very motivated to keep it that way.
And they’ll do whatever it takes to keep the pair of amateur sleuths from uncovering the truth.

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5th, 1850 near Dieppe in France.
Maupassant’s early life was badly torn when at age 11 (his younger brother Hervé was then five) his mother, Laure, a headstrong and independent-minded woman, risked social disgrace in order to obtain a legal separation from her husband.
After the separation, Laure kept custody of her two boys. With the father now forcibly absent, Laure became the most influential and important figure in the young boy's life.
Maupassant’s education was such that he rebelled against religion and other societal norms but a developing friendship with Gustave Flaubert began to turn his mind towards creativity and writing.
After graduation he volunteered for the Franco-Prussian war. With its end he moved to Paris to work as a clerk in the Navy Department. Gustave Flaubert now took him under his wing. Acting as a literary guardian to him, he guided the eager Maupassant to debuts in journalism and literature. For Maupassant these were exciting times and the awakening of his creative talents and ambitions.
In 1880 he published what is considered his first great work, ‘Boule de Suif’, (translated as as ‘Dumpling’, ‘Butterball’, ‘Ball of Fat’, or ‘Ball of Lard’) which met with a success that was both instant and overwhelming. Flaubert at once acknowledged that it was ‘a masterpiece that will endure.’ Maupassant had used his talents and experiences in the war to create something unique.
This decade from 1880 to 1891 was to be the most pivotal of his career. With an audience now made available by the success of ‘Boule de Suif’ Maupassant organised himself to work methodically and relentlessly to produce between two and four volumes of work a year. The melding of his talents and business sense and the continual hunger of sources for his works made him wealthy.
In his later years he developed a desire for solitude, an obsession for self-preservation, and a fear of death as well as a paranoia of persecution caused by the syphilis he had contracted in his youth.
On January 2nd, 1892, Maupassant tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat. Unsuccessful he was committed to the private asylum of Esprit Blanche at Passy, in Paris. It was here on July 6th, 1893 that Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant died at the age of only 42.

A Study in Scarlet is an 1887 detective novel by Scottish author Arthur Conan Doyle. The story marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who would become the most famous detective duo in popular fiction. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes, a consulting detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.

Washington Square, written by Henry James and published in 1880, is a poignant exploration of love, family dynamics, and societal expectations set in mid-19th-century New York City. The novel centers on Catherine Sloper, the plain and introverted daughter of Dr. Austin Sloper, a wealthy and respected physician.
Catherine's life is heavily influenced by her father's disapproval. Dr. Sloper, who lost his wife during childbirth, views Catherine as a disappointment; she lacks the beauty and brilliance he admired in her mother. This disappointment manifests in his dismissive treatment of her, stunting her emotional growth and leaving her socially awkward. The narrative takes a turn when Catherine meets Morris Townsend, a charming but financially unstable suitor at her cousin's engagement party.
Despite her father's skepticism about Morris's intentions—believing him to be primarily interested in Catherine's inheritance—the two quickly fall in love and become engaged.Dr. Sloper vehemently opposes the match, fearing that Morris is a fortune hunter. In an attempt to separate them, he takes Catherine on an extended trip to Europe, hoping she will forget Morris.
