Beschreibung

In the middle of the desert, a giant dome stands, made of fortified glass.Inside it: another, much smaller dome, black for privacy.Outside: thirsty humans. Hundreds, possibly thousands.Nora Haynes spends Eternal Summer inside. Luck blessed her that way. Timothy blessed her that way.But as the knocking of the madpeople continues, clamoring for water, her little bitter trick of ignoring them threatens to fall apart...

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume we explore and enjoy the stories of authors who attended one of the great seats of learning. Amongst their storied number are M R James, Hugh Walpole, William Makepeace Thackeray and a host of others.

Stream of consciousness seems matter of fact nowadays. But Woolf catapulted it into a new Modernist form. Characters now came with much individuality, flaws and form that literature was forever changed. Despite her tragic suicide and the sure loss of what was to come these stories still confirm her literary greatness.

When we think of ghost stories, we tend to think of cub scouts cringing by a fire, s'mores at the ready, as some aging camp counselor tries to scare them witless with yet another tale from the crypt.
M.R. James had a great, and simple, formula for writing ghost stories. Establish the mundane and everyday detail (which is heightened by the Victorian academic settings), and then introduce, briefly, the supernatural, which cracks the surface of everything normal that has been so carefully established.
This IS a book of CLASSIC horror stories. They don't depend nor do they need buckets of blood slung against a wall or descriptions of disembowelments or decapitations.
"M. R. James is to the ghost story as Petrarch to the sonnet: he didn't invent the form but he perfected it and no one since has been able to write one without acknowledging the master."

Man has learnt to control his dominion by the use of what initially lay about him; wood and stone for shelter and building as well as resources from the plant and animal worlds over which he slowly obtained dominion. But as he organised into Nations and Empires, he needed more with which to keep the whole machine spinning. Society was growing and consuming more. But many of the richer seams of fuel and minerals lay buried underground. These riches needed exploiting, brought to the surface to be used and sold.

In this volume our authors detail sharp-eyed narratives on people whose lives were connected and directed by what happened underground.
