Synopsis

Evelyn Dunmore returns to her bombed family estate in 1946, determined to lay her past to rest. When half-burned letters signed only “M” surface in the hearth, she assumes the worst—that her late husband, Captain Arthur Dunmore, harbored a hidden betrayal. Haunted by guilt and driven by fear, she destroys every scrap of paper, then sets out across village and countryside in search of answers she hopes will clear her name.

As Evelyn follows cryptic clues through rain-soaked platforms, abandoned cottages, and whispered village testimonies, she discovers more than lost correspondence. Each fragment deepens her dread, suggesting an unthinkable connection between the woman she thought she was and the shadow she fought to escape. With every burning ember and every recovered confession, the line between victim and perpetrator blurs, and Evelyn must confront a secret more dangerous than infidelity: the hidden fractures in her own memory.

Suspense builds as Evelyn races to piece together a shattered identity before the final spark of truth is silenced forever. With a mounting sense of dread and a storm gathering on the horizon, she grapples with the price of redemption—and wonders if some flames can never be doused.

Who is that other woman in the ashes, and how far will Evelyn go to reclaim the truth she once tried to destroy?

    Sixty-eight million pounds and DEAD!

Someone had once told Detective Inspector Keith Tremayne that some people were lucky and some weren't. Tremayne knew only one thing: the man lying dead in a pool of blood had qualified on the lucky after winning sixty-eight million pounds on a lottery ticket, but now his luck had run out.

Tremayne knew the victim, Alan Winters; even knew his family. The man with all his new wealth had not hidden behind closed doors, fending off the scrounging relatives, the newly-found friends. That wasn't Winters's style. He had been out and about, driving expensive cars, living well.

And now he was dead. Tremayne knew the questions would start to roll. And why was he lying on the Altar Stone at Stonehenge, naked, with his throat cut? Clare Yarwood, his sergeant, had seen the body as well, turned away initially at the sight of it, but had taken a deep breath and stood alongside Tremayne. 'Nasty one, guv,' she said.

In sleepy, rural North Wales, Frankie Gibbs, a recently laid off, aimless twenty-year-old on Universal Credit, wants nothing more than to keep his younger brother out of the care system. He single-handedly takes this upon himself while their alcoholic, cocaine-addict, single-parent father, Guy Gibbs, heaps misery on their lives through systematic abuse and his never-ending wild parties. After Guy is sent to prison, Frankie is coerced into opening his home to Justin, an acquaintance from his school days now turned drug dealer, while his own addiction and self-worth spiral beyond recognition.
''One visit is an astonishing debut. It's raw, shocking, disturbing, insightful and dark, pretty much from start to finish. There are flashes of wit but, in the main, it's a full-frontal assault with the truth of physical, psychological, social and political deterioration in a beautiful part of Wales.''
