Sinopse

Museum Expansion Wars examines the increasing competition among museums for funding, real estate, and cultural influence. Traditionally seen as cultural repositories, museums now actively engage in economic and political arenas. The book reveals how museums vie for financial resources through grants and sponsorships, compete for prime urban land, often sparking community clashes, and seek to shape cultural narratives to attract diverse audiences. These battles highlight the complex interplay between cultural institutions, economic forces, and political agendas, revealing that museums are active agents in shaping public perception.

The book explores the evolution of museums, from private collections to public institutions, addressing historical context and theoretical frameworks. Case studies analyze specific museum expansion efforts, focusing on strategies employed, challenges faced, and consequences of actions relating to funding, land acquisition, and cultural influence. Museum Expansion Wars uniquely connects these struggles into a coherent narrative, departing from traditional museum studies by focusing on economic and political forces.

This study offers practical insights for museum professionals and policymakers, providing a comprehensive overview of the forces shaping the contemporary cultural landscape. The book addresses the ethical dilemmas arising from revenue pressures, such as accepting conflicting funding or prioritizing blockbuster exhibitions. It proposes strategies for a more equitable museum ecosystem.

Ancient Egypt was a civilization deeply rooted in religion, where gods and goddesses played an essential role in shaping daily life, governance, and the afterlife. The Egyptian pantheon was vast, with deities representing natural forces, human emotions, and cosmic order. These gods were not distant or abstract figures but were actively involved in the lives of the people, influencing everything from the flooding of the Nile to the fate of the soul after death. The Egyptians believed that by honoring their gods through rituals, prayers, and temple offerings, they could maintain harmony in the universe.
One of the defining aspects of Egyptian religion was its polytheistic nature. Unlike monotheistic faiths, which center around a single divine being, the Egyptians worshipped hundreds of gods, each with unique attributes, symbols, and responsibilities. Some, like Ra, the sun god, were powerful and widely revered, while others, such as Taweret, the hippo goddess of childbirth, had more specialized roles. Many deities evolved over time, merging with others or taking on new characteristics as different cities and dynasties rose to prominence. This fluidity allowed Egyptian religion to remain relevant for over three thousand years.
The gods were not only worshipped in grand temples but were also deeply integrated into the personal lives of the people. Pharaohs were believed to be divine or semi-divine figures, ruling as representatives of the gods on Earth. Priests conducted elaborate ceremonies in temple complexes dedicated to major deities, ensuring their favor and protection over the land. Ordinary Egyptians also kept small shrines in their homes, prayed to household gods for blessings, and wore protective amulets bearing sacred symbols. Magic and mythology were intertwined with religious practice, with spells and sacred texts often invoking the names of gods for healing, guidance, and protection.

The world of contemplative Christianity has yielded to the same voices for far too long, many of whom are from centuries before our time, with lives unlike our own, and often from experiences disconnected from marginalization, oppression, and what it feels like to be an outsider.

Cassidy Hall, an LGBTQIA+ Christian contemplative scholar and podcast host, takes us on a journey to queer the contemplative tradition.

As queerness reawakened her own contemplative life, Hall discovered that queering and questioning the tradition allowed her to listen more closely to voices that are queer, marginalized, and oppressed. In showing us the way, she helps us envision what contemplative faith can look like, what spiritual spaces we can reclaim for welcome—and how queering contemplation, and lifting up queer contemplative voices, frees us to seek the infinite possibility of our own identity and engage our spiritual lives with open hearts and open hands.

Whether you're queer or want to queer your own perspectives, Hall throws open the doors of contemplative spirituality for all, bringing us to contemplation in very new, sometimes old, but always queer ways.

Carl R. Trueman and Other Christian Evangelical Scholars Examine the Life and Work of Renowned Catholic, Social Conservative Thinker Robert P. George
Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University, is one of the most influential conservative intellectuals of his generation. Among many honors and accolades, George received the US Presidential Citizens Medal from President George W. Bush and served as chairman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Though a Catholic himself, George's influence has transcended traditional religious categories to shape evangelical discourse on politics, ethics, and political philosophy throughout his career.
In this thorough introduction and careful analysis of George's work for Protestant audiences, editor Andrew T. Walker gathers essays from high profile evangelical writers and academics—including Carl R. Trueman, Hunter Baker, Jennifer Marshall Patterson, and Scott Klusendorf—to explore subjects such as faith and reason, George's New Natural Law theory, and how to collaborate across ideological lines. Social Conservatism for the Common Good helps Christian evangelicals understand George's philosophy and apply it to their own cultural engagement and public witness.

    - Biography of Influential Conservative Scholar Robert P. George: Explores the breadth of his political philosophy and activism, as well as his relevance to the evangelical community
    - Engaging Political Analysis from a Biblical Perspective: With a foreword by US Senator Ben Sasse, this book covers important cultural and academic topics including human rights, social and public ethics, and pro-life issues
    - Ideal Resource for Evangelical Scholars and Thinkers: Written for pastors, students, and those interested in politics, this robust book appeals to readers of Carl R. Trueman's The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self

Since her death in 2003, Nina Simone has been the subject of an astonishing number of rereleased, remastered, and remixed albums and compilations as well as biographies, films, viral memes, samples, and soundtracks. In Fantasies of Nina Simone, Jordan Alexander Stein examines the space between our collective and individual fantasies about Simone the performer, civil rights activist, and icon, and her own fantasies about herself. Stein outlines how Simone gave voice to personal fantasies through releasing dozens of covers of her white male contemporaries. With her covers of George Harrison, the Bee Gees, Bob Dylan, and others, Simone explored and claimed the power and perspective that come with race and gender privilege. Looking at examples from Simone's four-decade genre-bending career—from songbook standards, jazz, and pop to folk, junkanoo, and reggae—and at her work's many uptakes and afterlives, Stein mobilizes the psychoanalytic concept of fantasy to build a black feminist history with and for this multifaceted performing artist.
