  Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856-1910) was a painter whose art has been described as a Symbolist and Proto-Expressionist. He exerted a tremendous influence on Russian avant-garde painters. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Vrubel made many trips to Italy and earned his living restoring medieval art treasures. This greatly influenced Vrubel's choice of subject matter, although he was also heavily influenced by the literature of his own country, which was then in full flower. The magnificent full-colour reproductions in this book of the Russian master, whose work deserves to be far better known in the West, will be a revelation to all who are unfamiliar with his work and a delight to the enthusiast.

  The question of control for Black women is a costly one. From 1986 onwards, the trajectory of Janet Jackson’s career can be summed up in her desire for control. Control for Janet was never simply just about her desire for economic and creative control over her career but was, rather, an existential question about the desire to control and be in control over her bodily integrity as a Black woman. This book examines Janet’s continuation of her quest for control as heard in her sixth album, The Velvet Rope. Engaging with the album, the promotion, the tour, and its accompanying music videos, this study unpacks how Janet uses Black cultural production as an emancipatory act of self-creation that allows her to reconcile with and, potentially, heal from trauma, pain, and feelings of alienation. The Velvet Rope’s arc moves audiences to imagine the possibility of what emancipation from oppression--from sexual, to internal, to societal--could look like for the singer and for others. The sexually charged content and themes of abuse, including self-harm and domestic violence, were dismissed as “selling points” for Janet at the time of its release. The album stands out as a revelatory expression of emotional vulnerability by the singer, one that many other artists have followed in the 20-plus years since its release.

  The Nara Period (710–794) marked a transformative era in Japanese history, characterized by the establishment of a centralized government, the increasing influence of Buddhism, and cultural exchanges with China and Korea. It was during this time that Japan’s first permanent capital was established in Nara, shaping the foundations of political and cultural development for centuries to come. 
  Before the Nara Period, Japan’s capitals frequently shifted locations with the death of each emperor, a practice rooted in Shinto beliefs regarding spiritual purity. However, in 710, Emperor Genmei broke this tradition by moving the capital to Heijō-kyō (modern-day Nara), modeling it after the grand Tang dynasty capital of Chang’an. This decision signified Japan’s growing commitment to a stable and sophisticated political structure. Nara’s grid-like city layout, Buddhist temples, and administrative buildings reflected Chinese architectural and governmental influences, showcasing the era’s desire for centralized control and cultural refinement. 
  At the heart of the Nara government was the ritsuryō system, an adaptation of China’s bureaucratic model, which aimed to solidify imperial rule through codified laws, land distribution policies, and taxation systems. The emperor held supreme authority, but powerful aristocratic families, particularly the Fujiwara clan, played a crucial role in court politics. The implementation of the Taihō Code in 701 reinforced these administrative reforms, further consolidating the emperor’s influence while allowing aristocrats to maintain their dominance over court affairs.

  Vincent van Gogh is undoubtedly one of the most influential painters of the end of the 19th century. His style was unique in that he used all types of colors in a painting that didn’t show those colors in reality and somehow, he still made it work and look like an actual shape. Different from other impressionistic artists, he developed his still lifes, his portraits, and other beautiful paintings. 
  An entire museum in Amsterdam is dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh. And even though his name is famous now, his life was tough, and he faced many fears, worries, and inner demons. Van Gogh was depressed. According to the narrative, he cut off his own ear, and eventually, he committed suicide at the age of 37. The sad reality that this artist’s success wasn’t evident during his life but only after his death, doesn’t change the fact that he is, nevertheless, a grand success. If only he were alive to see it. 
  Let’s discuss the circumstances under which this Dutch painter lived, and what moved him to go into the direction in which he did.
