Synopsis

Thirty-somethings Faith and Peter seem to have a charmed life: successful careers - he as a publisher,  she as a TV weather presenter - two slightly peculiar but kind-hearted teenagers, and an extremely intelligent dog called Graham.  But at their fifteenth wedding anniversary party Faith finds the champagne suddenly tastes a little flat. For, out of the blue, her best friend Lily makes a barbed comment about Peter which sets Faith's alarm bells ringing.  Why is he looking so trim and well dressed?  And why is he so jumpy of late?  As Faith's niggling doubts turn to naked suspicion she feels the chill factor kick in, and, as she tries to recapture the sunny days of her past she is forced to admit that, for the time being at least, the outlook is decidely unsettled.  The re-issued fourth novel from the internationally best-selling author of 'A Vintage Affair'.

Jerome Stevens makes people laugh for a living. Or he tries to... The stand-up circuit is a world of extremes where money talks, agents slither and hecklers throw mince pies. It's hard to balance the demands of touring with family life - especially when Jerome is a star everywhere except his own home and his seven-year-old son is his biggest critic. Follow Jerome as he moves from the blind terror of a first open spot to being hounded out of Wales by an angry mob of brewery staff. As he chases the elusive beast that is laughter, meet violent bouncers, paranoid celebrities and humourless producers all competing to milk the comedy cash-cow. But exactly who is having the last laugh when he finds himself thrown into a Chinese prison? Fizzing with the one-liners and surreal humour for which Milton Jones is famous, this is an authentic, hilarious story of the life of a stand-up comedian, written by the real deal.

"It's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon, my home town…." Each week, more than four million radio listeners hear these words, and settle in for some old-fashioned, up-to-the-minute storytelling. During live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor takes us to "the little town that time forgot and the decades cannot improve," where "the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average." These expertly crafted tales touch the heart and tickle the funnybone. Warm, poignant, often hilarious, each is a classic of live storytelling, full of gentle humor, genuine emotion, and (more often than not) surprising insights into family, community, love, faith, and hope.

In this early "Jeeves" novel, the infamous Bertie Wooster, rebuffing the assistance of his trusty manservant Jeeves, attempts to help his old chum and newt-fancier Gussie Fink-Nottle win the affections of the goofy but adorable Madeline Bassett. But without Jeeves to lend a hand, chaos ensues, and Bertie finds himself accidentally - and horribly - engaged to Madeline himself. Right Ho, Jeeves contains a passage described by actor Stephen Fry (a Jeeves and Bertie veteran) as "the single funniest piece of sustained writing in the language". A much beloved romp by the master of satirical comedy, the legendary P.G. Wodehouse

In his introduction, Ed Gamble points out the intriguing relationship of political cartoonist and politician. It is a relationship that can range from downright antagonistic to one of mutual praise. While political cartoonists would have a hard time making a livelihood without politicians, politicians often do wish that they were living without editorial cartoonists. It is a sentiment one might infer from the forewords by former presidents George Bush and Gerald Ford. President Bush discusses how you have to "take the good with the bad" in the world of editorial cartoons. "Grin and bear it," he says, "that's the best way." President Ford feels that humor is "indispensible to democracy" and the "clearest and most resounding expression of freedom that we have," although he too has felt the sting of cartoonist attacks. Overall, his best advice after nearly three decades of political service in the nation's capital is to "smile; maybe the next one will be nicer." In this collection of cartoons, the editorial cartoonist for the Florida Times-Union focuses on the ups, downs, and pitfalls of the political world. The title refers to Bill and Hillary Clinton, the subject of the first seven chapters. These chapters include: "In the Beginning: The Campaign," "Bill and Hillary Take Over," "Foreign Affairs: The New Confused Order," "Domestic Affairs: More Disorder!," "Hillary's Health Care," "Whitewater, and Foreign Affairs II: Help!" Other chapters discuss topics from the O. J. Simpson trial to the November 1994 elections to the new Republican agenda.
