Beschreibung

Isabel Ostrander's "The Collected Works" presents a rich tapestry of early 20th-century American literature, weaving together themes of identity, societal expectations, and psychological depth. Known for her intricate character development and poignant narratives, Ostrander employs a blend of realism and impressionistic style, inviting readers to delve into the emotional landscapes of her protagonists. This compilation highlights her versatility, featuring short stories, serialized novels, and articles that reflect the complexities of contemporary life, while also anchoring her voice within the literary movements of her time, including the burgeoning modernism that sought to break from traditional storytelling forms. Ostrander, a prolific writer and journalist, was immersed in the literary circles of New York and was influenced by the upheavals of her era, including the suffrage movement and the aftermath of World War I. Her diverse experiences as a woman in publishing and a keen observer of social dynamics equipped her with the insightful perspective found in her work. Ultimately, she sought to give voice to the struggles and triumphs of women, shedding light on their multifaceted roles in society during a period of great change. "The Collected Works" is a compelling collection that not only preserves Ostrander's literary contributions but also serves as a lens through which to view the evolving narrative of women's experiences in the early 20th century. Six teens murdered. A suspect behind bars. A desperate father. In a case this shadowy, the truth is easy to hide.
Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She’s spent a decade treating California’s most depraved predators and unlocking their motives - predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the Bloody Heart Killer is damning - and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development...
Defense attorney Robert Kavin is a still-traumatized father whose own son fell prey to the BH Killer. Convinced of Thompson’s innocence, he steps in to represent him. Now Robert wants Gwen to interview the accused, create a psych profile of the killer and his victims, and help clear his client’s name.
As Gwen and Robert grow closer and she dives deeper into the investigation, grave questions arise. So does Gwen’s suspicion that Robert is hiding something - and that he might not be the only one with a secret.

"The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" is one of 12 Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in the Strand Magazine October 1921.
Watson arrives at 221B Baker Street where the page boy Billy shows him a wax effigy of Holmes placed near a curtained window in the sitting room. The effigy produces a shadow on the curtain that, when viewed from outside, is the unmistakable profile of Sherlock Holmes. Using this visual trick, Holmes aims to give a perfect target to a would-be murderer with a rifle. Holmes names his murderer as Count Negretto Sylvius, the diamond thief he has been following in disguise. He gives the criminal's address to Watson, then sends the doctor out the back for the police. As the Count arrives, Holmes has Billy invite him inside, then takes him by surprise when he attempts an assault on the effigy. Holmes then offers the Count and his helper, boxer Sam Merton, freedom if they give up the jewel, or jail if not.

Justice is blind. Vengeance sees everything.

Twenty-year-old Agnes has spent years living in the shadows of a trauma she couldn't name. Her only sanctuary is Ullsaxen, a secret online community where survivors find the one thing the legal system denied them: belief. But as the group grows, a darker shadow begins to fall across Gotland.

Acquitted predators and suspected offenders are being hunted. One by one, they are found dead, their bodies marked with a single, cryptic name: Erinya. Beside each victim lies a pair of wool shears-the jagged signature of a killer who has decided that the courts are no longer enough.

For Detective Inspector Maria Wern, the case is a minefield. Her own colleague, Jarita, is being forced to relive her nightmare as her attackers appeal their convictions. When one of the men walks free, the vigilante's message becomes clear: no one is beyond reach. But the real danger might be inside the precinct.

Reinforcements have arrived from the mainland in the form of a formidable investigator nicknamed 'Ragnarök.' Instead of helping, he seems intent on dismantling the investigation from within. As Maria uncovers evidence that Ragnarök is protecting someone at the highest levels, she realizes she is no longer just hunting a killer-she is fighting a conspiracy that could shatter the police force forever.

In the haunting twenty-first installment of the Maria Wern series, international bestseller Anna Jansson explores the terrifying line between justice and revenge. On Gotland, the shears are open, and no secret is safe.

Trigger warning for sexual abuse and rape.
