Beschreibung

In "Shipwrecks on Cape Cod," Isaac M. Small meticulously chronicles one of the most treacherous coastal regions in America, delving into the harrowing tales of maritime disasters that have plagued Cape Cod since colonial times. With a narrative style that blends rigorous historical research with vivid storytelling, Small interweaves personal accounts, ship logs, and contemporary analysis to paint a comprehensive portrait of each shipwreck's impact on the local populace and the broader maritime community. The book offers a rich tapestry of cultural and environmental contexts, highlighting the interplay between nature and human endeavor in this perilous locale. Isaac M. Small, a historian and maritime enthusiast, draws upon his extensive background in maritime studies and local folklore to bring these stories to life. Growing up in a fishing family along the Cape's shores, Small's passion for the ocean and its history profoundly influenced his scholarly pursuits. His work is a culmination of decades of archival research, interviews with descendants of shipwreck victims, and a deep-rooted respect for the seafaring traditions of the area. "Shipwrecks on Cape Cod" is an essential read for anyone fascinated by maritime history, local folklore, or the environmental challenges faced by coastal communities. In Unit 1 you will hear Italian decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Italian speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Italian. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Italian at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Italian, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.

As the cultural conversation around race, gender, and sexuality has evolved, straight, white men are becoming increasingly aware of their privilege. But many may be left thinking, "OK, what am I supposed to do about it?" "We need a way forward beyond feelings of guilt, overwhelmingness, anger, and denial." "We are looking for transformative guidance that helps us be the good guys we want to be."

Straight, white, male pastor Chris Furr offers a guide to deconstructing that privilege in Straight White Male. With an emphasis on confession and redemption, Furr invites other privileged men to reconsider the ways they live, work, believe, and interact with others. Alongside Furr's perspective, essays from contributing writers who lack various types of privilege—straight, Black man William J. Barber II, straight, white woman Melissa Florer-Bixler, queer, nonbinary latinx Robyn Henderson-Espinoza, and gay, white man Matthias Roberts—offer insights on how particular types and combinations of privilege (and the lack thereof) shape the way we move through the world. Their combined voices offer much-needed perspective through this deconstruction and provide a vision for how straight, white men can do better for ourselves, our families, and society.

After a brutal assault in NYC, Haely moves to San Francisco to try and reinvent herself. Unfortunately, she isn’t prepared to teach in the men’s county jail, and all the inmates know it. Drawn into a reckless romance with Ghost, a charming but calculating burglar she meets inside, Haely's obsession with uncovering his disturbing secrets thrusts her into a waking nightmare of drugs and violence, from which she may not survive.
Meanwhile in Prague, frat boy Otto Tepidstein grapples with the emotional fallout of having been cheated on. His quest for unattainable justice leads him down a Kafka-esque rabbit hole into Prague's gritty underworld of sexual depravity. There he has a chance encounter with Milka, a phlebotomist seemingly out of place in the world of sex work.
When an unsettling video surfaces on a porn site, depicting unspeakable acts, the twisted connections between these four troubled souls leads each one to their own irreversible fate.
In this lurid tale, based on true events, we discover that no matter our backgrounds, we all stand on the brink—one poor choice away from an abyss of self-destruction from which there is no return. As Nietzsche said, "sometimes you stare into the hole, and sometimes the hole stares back."

Life in the ancient ages was not as “easy” as it has become in the last two hundred years! It was literally a very dangerous place to be, and you could get yourself in trouble, or even killed, quite easily and without much effort. The best two inventions ever created by humankind are laws and law enforcement. Without them, we would still be living in a jungle-like state where every one of us would do as he pleased and we would have no security whatsoever. Laws and law enforcement came as a necessary measure to protect each and every individual in society, and that is why people are so scared of wars and chaos, as if these two happen, both law and law enforcement would be suspended, well, at least in practice, which is what counts.
When I got married, my wife was 23 years old and I was moving to a new job, and right after the wedding, when we traveled so we could join our new companies, the first thing she told me was not to trust anyone at work. She said that if we could not trust anyone in life in general, what would we say about work, where everybody is a competitor or, at least, a potential competitor. Keep this in mind while you go through your corporate journey, as it is as true now as it was since the beginning of time.
In this book you will learn: How to deal with a difficult bossHow to deal with colleaguesHow to get promoted without adding any physical effort. How to deal with difficult situationsHow to avoid your boss or colleagues stealing your work creditsAnd so much more.

As Four Thousand Hooks opens, an Alaskan fishing schooner is sinking. It is the summer of 1972, and the sixteen-year-old narrator is at the helm. Backtracking from the gripping prologue, Dean Adams describes how he came to be a crew member on the Grant and weaves a tale of adventure that is like a novel—with drama, conflict, and resonant portrayals of halibut fishing, his ragtag shipmates, maritime Alaska, and the ambiguities of family life.

At sea, the Grant's crew teach Dean the daily tasks of baiting thousands of longline hooks and handling the catch, and on shore they lead him through the seedy bars and guilty pleasures of Kodiak. Exhausted by twenty-hour workdays and awed by the ocean's raw power, he observes examples of human courage and vulnerability and emerges with a deeper knowledge of himself and the world.

Four Thousand Hooks is both an absorbing adventure story and a rich ethnography of a way of life and work that has sustained Northwest families for generations. This coming of age story will appeal to listeners including young adults and anyone interested in ocean adventures, commercial fishing, maritime life, and the Northwest coast.
