Summary

"Glider Origins" offers a captivating journey through the evolution of unpowered flight, from ancient dreams to modern engineering marvels. Beginning with Otto Lilienthal's groundbreaking controlled flights in 1891, the book weaves together the technical foundations of aerodynamics with the compelling stories of aviation pioneers who dared to challenge gravity.

Through meticulous research drawing from primary sources and engineering archives, readers discover how early glider experiments laid the essential groundwork for all modern aviation. The narrative progresses chronologically, exploring three key aspects: the fundamental engineering principles of unpowered flight, the visionary inventors who advanced glider technology, and the transformation of gliding from experimental science to recreational pursuit.

Particularly fascinating is the examination of how German gliding movements of the 1920s and 1930s, along with wartime necessity, drove significant technological innovations in aircraft design. The book expertly balances technical content with accessibility, explaining complex concepts like lift, drag, and thermal dynamics through clear examples and practical applications.

What sets this work apart is its comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, connecting glider development to meteorology, materials science, and physics. The book explores both civilian and military applications, from training pilots to conducting atmospheric research, while maintaining a focus on the engineering principles that make unpowered flight possible. For mechanical engineers, aviation enthusiasts, and students alike, it serves as both a technical reference and a testament to human ingenuity in the quest for flight.

This is a book for people who wake up at 5am (or 4am or 3am) worrying. Maybe you don’t call it worrying, maybe you call it planning or organising. Sometimes it is helpful. Sometimes genius and the truth arrives at this time. But sometimes it is just your mind or your ego spinning lies, keeping you awake, freaking out your body, making you sick, torturing you, trying to keep you small.I've been there. Years, months and just hours ago. And it is so wonderful to get over it, to be able to choose to get up and use this time to greet the dawn, to get clarity and change my life, or to soothe the beast and be able to go back to sleep in peace, and wake again knowing that there is nothing to be afraid of, that I am life and my life is perfect and we are all perfect. This is a book about faith, about adventure, about living with my heart open and letting go of the fear of being myself. In June 2016 I decided to sell my house of 22 years and leave my comfort zone. I had no idea where I would go next, but slowly the Camino de Santiago showed itself and I decided, with no rucksack or hiking experience to start...In the first part of this story, I left England and flew to Seville and travelled on to Granada, where I stayed first in a treehouse and then a cave… before I picked up my rucksack and headed north on the Camino.Through vineyards and, accidentally, up mountains, I walked, and then back by bus and on, trying somehow to follow the yellow arrows of the Way. In the second part, I changed direction, up through the heart of Spain, before wandering through Portugal and the land of the stars, finding my way to the sea and to the Route Portuguese. Onwards and upwards, to the official destination, Santiago, and then a little further to the spiritual destination, Finisterre – the end of the earth. And so I turned homeward, with the warning from Finisterre, that the end of the Camino is just the beginning.

    In Kent with Charles Dickens

By his own admission, Thomas Frost found it hard to make a living from his writing, and no doubt he used the name of Dickens in the title of this book to boost sales. Frost tells a good tale, and the book is not only of interest to enthusiasts of Dickens and the county of Kent.He includes some of Dickens' own descriptions of locations, as well as regaling us with anecdotes about towns and villages which he visits, including an account of the last armed rising on British soil - the Battle of Bossenden Wood.As well as accounts of his travels through the highways and byways of Kent in the footsteps of Dickens and his characters, he also wanders into the lanes of myth and legend, sometimes making up his own stories along the way. After managing to forgive his cardinal sin of confusing Men of Kent and Kentish Men in the first chapter, I found this rather odd mixture of memoir, short stories and literary travelogue a most enjoyable read. This Autistic Girl Went to Japan is the inspiring story of a young woman who moved halfway around the world in pursuit of happiness. With humor and remarkable candor, Bianca describes the challenges of applying for a visa during a time of terrifying uncertainty, slogging through endless red tape, and the loneliness that comes with being a stranger in a strange land. Oh, and how she wound up evicting a bat from her new apartment, attending a Pokémon GO event with a bunch of middle-aged women, and discovering the best thrift store in all of Tokyo. Along the way, she explains why she feels so at home in Japan, where things are often a bit easier for autistic folks. Well, except for revenue stamps. And opening a bank account. And faxes.

An Inland Voyage presents a contemplative journey through rivers, villages, and the quiet interiors of the human soul. Written in the richly meditative voice associated with Herman Melville, the book transforms a modest inland expedition into a profound exploration of nature, solitude, and the restless spirit of mankind.

As the narrator drifts through winding waterways and rural landscapes, each encounter—whether with strangers, shifting weather, or moments of silence—becomes an occasion for reflection. Far from the vast oceans of Melville's seafaring tales, this inland passage reveals that the same elemental struggles exist wherever a man travels: freedom and confinement, purpose and uncertainty, observation and introspection.

Blending travel narrative with philosophical inquiry, An Inland Voyage meditates on the relationship between humanity and the natural world, suggesting that the true voyage is not measured in miles, but in awareness. With lyrical prose, subtle humor, and penetrating insight, the book invites readers to slow their pace, question their assumptions, and discover meaning in life's quieter currents.

This is a journey not of conquest, but of understanding—one that lingers long after the final page.
