Synopsis

Immanuel Kant: Philosophical Books, Critiques & Essays offers a comprehensive exploration of Kant's pivotal contributions to philosophy, characterized by his meticulous analytical style and profound inquiries into human understanding, metaphysics, and ethics. This anthology includes seminal works such as the "Critique of Pure Reason" and the "Critique of Practical Reason," revealing Kant's revolutionary approach to epistemology and moral philosophy. The text contextualizes Kant within the Enlightenment, highlighting his critiques of empiricism and rationalism while addressing the limits of human cognition and the foundations of moral law. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a luminary of German philosophy whose intellectual journey paralleled the dramatic shifts of the Enlightenment. Influenced by the rationalist and empiricist traditions, Kant developed a unique philosophical framework that sought to reconcile human experience with the inherent structures of reason. His rich academic background and engagement with contemporary philosophical debates led to the formulation of his critical philosophy, which continues to resonate and inspire modern thought. This volume is essential for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of philosophical concepts that shaped modern Western thought. Kant's works challenge readers to confront fundamental questions about knowledge, morality, and the limits of human reason, making this anthology a vital resource for scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike.

In Little Deaths All in a Row: Essays on Sex and Death, Earley delves into memories of past lovers and offers vivid portraits of the hospice patients she has worked with after recovering from her own near-fatal injuries. Tracing the many connections—philosophical, scientific, ethical, and spiritual—between sex and death, these lyric essays ponder the afterlife, pain and pleasure, quantum entanglement and love, and the “strange and painful goodness of being alive.”

A furious denunciation of coronavirus criminals

The rogues gallery begins with Donald Trump, who deliberately downplayed the coronavirus crisis despite knowing its dangers, as well as his international political allies, above all Boris Johnson. Billionaire politicians like Georgia senator Kelly Loeffler moved stocks at the same time they were telling Americans all was well. Political charlatans like Education Secretary Betsy DeVos undermined public safety in order to advance their agenda. Libertarian "think tanks" like the Ayn Rand Institute decried public expenditures but were first in line to get bailout checks. Pharmaceutical companies gamed the vaccine race, and the most rapacious global corporations like Facebook, Visa, and Pfizer have found the pandemic to be very profitable indeed, vastly enriching the already grotesquely bloated fortunes of trillionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Charles Koch.

Guilty Men closes with a call for a version of the Pecora Commission, initiated by newly elected Franklin Roosevelt, that took aim at what FDR called "speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, and profiteering" that stoked the Depression. The commission led to some of the most far-reaching reforms in US history, as well as sensational hearings that led to the fall of the leading bankers and financiers of that era.

Lord Byron’s very name conjures up visions of the Romantic movement and outlandishly dressed bohemians, for if Alfred, Lord Tennyson was the poetic darling of the masses, Byron was the hero of the hedonists. While the traditional English literary hero was a nobleman rescuing a damsel in distress, Byron created the anti-hero, a man plagued by self-doubt and hidden sorrow. At the same time, his hero was also capable of facing reality once he had wrestled through his own angst, and even of occasionally acting nobly in the great tradition of the author’s Puritan forebears.
If Byron himself was eclectic in his tastes and character, his poetry was even more so, for he could feature satiric pieces poking fun at the status quo and historical renditions of ancient battles fought with nobility and valor, all in the same volume. Like so many other writers, he used poetry to explore his own most deeply guarded secrets, in one poem playing in first person the dramatic hero and in another the troubled penitent. He was sometimes funny, sometimes lyrical, and sometimes verbose, but he was always interesting, and that is what allowed him to become one of the most famous writers of all time, almost against his own will, and despite his premature death.
Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace were the first to conceive the notion of a programmable and automatic universal computer, which, on top of its ability to calculate any mathematical equation at an unmatched speed, could also be used for a seemingly infinite number of other applications. In other words, they envisioned the precursor to the modern computer. It was certainly an unusual path for any woman, and she managed to do so before an incredibly premature death. Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, died in 1852 at the age of 36, but during her short and tumultuous life, she was one of the first to recognize that computers could do far more than complex calculations.

‘Raw, intense and absorbing.’ Matt Haig
‘As tender and funny as it is painful.’ TLS
‘I didn’t give my hands much thought before they turned against me. … They have been chipping away at my life, slowly, slowly, in a way I could never have predicted.’
Lauren Brown is anxious. And when she feels worried, she picks at her skin. Secretly, quietly, but increasingly compulsively, her skin-picking begins to affect her day-to-day life until she realizes she must unravel the reasons behind it.
This sparkling memoir follows the thread of Lauren’s anxiety – tangled and frayed – back to its source. Written with rare wit and insight, it is an attempt to redirect the anxiety that’s pooled in her fingertips for as long as she can remember, released in odd bursts in caravan parks, on European holidays, at GP surgeries and on the wind-stung north-east coast. It is a moving and joyful exploration of obsession, forgiveness, stigma and healing, and a true love-song to the north.
Thoughtful, unsparing and at times darkly comic, Hands is the masterful debut of a luminous new talent.
Lauren Brown's Hands is a literary masterpiece that delves into the depths of OCD and personal anxieties. It's a top-rated autobiography that offers a unique perspective on mental health disorders and the journey towards healing.
