Beschreibung

Yemen is justly famed as one of the world's most dramatically beautiful countries. Seen in the Yemen brings the people, architecture and landscapes of this ancient culture alive to the reader through the medium of the author's remarkable black-and-white photographs, taken in the 1970s, and here reproduced in duotone. His book is also a tribute to one of the most famous of all Arab and Asian travellers, the late Dame Freya Stark (1893-1993).

In the mid-1970s, at the age of eighty-three, she made two visits to the author, who was then serving in Sana'a. Their travels together through north Yemen marked the start of a long friendship. The volume is also designed to emulate Freya Stark's earlier classic, Seen in the Hadhramaut, published by John Murray in 1938.

Beginning with reminiscences of Dame Freya, the author recalls the time they spent together in Yemen, her musings on the past, and their mutual devotion to Leica cameras. He goes on to give a brief account of Yemen's history and geography, and describes his adventurous rediscovery of the remaining ancient Jewish community around Sa'dah in the far north. All this is brought alive in his extraordinary images, taken on his own wanderings and also on journeys with Dame Freya and other noted Arabian travellers such as Wilfred Thesiger and Dame Violet Dickson.

The prints are introduced by a short description of those notable 1930s screw-thread Leica cameras used by so many early explorer-photographers. Yemen today, like the rest of Arabia, is undergoing rapid and inevitable change and, at the time of writing, is much in the news.

This book records a time when town and country had only recently embarked on the decades of upheaval, and much was visually unchanged. The author's artistic eye imparts an unforgettable aura of romance and nostalgia to his pictures which, like Freya Stark's, will cast their spell over readers present and future.

Mexico’s history is a fascinating blend of ancient civilizations, colonial rule, and modern economic evolution. Situated at the crossroads of North and Central America, the country has played a crucial role in shaping regional and global events. From the sophisticated societies of the Mayans and Aztecs to the dramatic upheavals brought by Spanish colonization, each era has left an indelible mark on Mexico’s cultural and economic landscape. This book explores key milestones that have defined Mexico’s development and the economic transformations that continue to shape its future.
The origins of Mexico’s rich history begin with its diverse geography, which has influenced the rise of powerful civilizations. The Aztecs, with their vast empire and advanced societal structures, left behind a legacy of engineering, agriculture, and governance that still resonates today. Similarly, the Mayans developed sophisticated mathematical and astronomical systems, highlighting the intellectual achievements of pre-Columbian Mexico. These civilizations thrived for centuries before encountering the seismic changes that came with European arrival.
The Spanish conquest in the early 16th century marked a profound turning point. Hernán Cortés and his forces, aided by superior weaponry and alliances with indigenous groups, dismantled the Aztec Empire and imposed colonial rule. Spain’s domination reshaped Mexico’s social, economic, and political structures. The encomienda system placed indigenous populations under harsh labor conditions, while the introduction of Catholicism and European traditions altered local customs and belief systems. Despite the oppression, Mexico’s indigenous and mestizo populations adapted, creating a unique cultural fusion that remains a defining aspect of the country’s identity.

Most people only consider the Mississippi River when they cross it or when it inconveniently abandons its banks. But every year, millions of tons of cargo are transported by towboats on the river. In Peep Light, Captain Lee Hendrix provides unique insight on people who work and live on and near the Mississippi River. Hendrix, formerly a pilot for the Delta Queen Steamboat Co., has worked on the Mississippi for fifty years. In 2014, Hendrix became captain of the towboat Mississippi with the US Army Corps of Engineers, then he later retired to return to passenger vessels. For Hendrix and others like him, he is at home on the river, living and dining with the same people they work with, working with familiar faces for years at a time and yet meeting new people every day.

Demonstrating a fascination not only with the river but also with the passions and dreams of those who live and work on it, these stories range from personal reflections on aging, experiencing one's first night on the river and the complex emotions that come with it, working on the deck, promotion to pilot, the characters working aboard these boats, and the history of the river itself. Peep Light unites humans with the river through engaging storytelling and sheds light on Hendrix's rare experience along one of the most powerful and important waterways in the world.

The Kushan Empire, one of the most influential powers in Central and South Asia, originated from the nomadic Yuezhi people. The Yuezhi were an Indo-European group that initially resided in the western regions of China, near the Tarim Basin. However, in the 2nd century BCE, they were forced to migrate westward due to conflicts with the Xiongnu, a dominant steppe confederation. This migration led them into Central Asia, where they eventually settled in the Bactrian region, which had previously been under Greek influence following the campaigns of Alexander the Great.
Over time, the Yuezhi tribes consolidated their power, and by the 1st century CE, one of their clans, the Kushans, emerged as the dominant force. Kujula Kadphises, the first major ruler of the Kushan Dynasty, is credited with unifying the fragmented Yuezhi groups and establishing the foundation of the empire. Under his leadership, the Kushans expanded their influence, incorporating regions of modern-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. His military campaigns against the remnants of the Indo-Greek and Indo-Scythian kingdoms allowed the Kushans to gain control over crucial trade routes, solidifying their position as a major power in the region.
The early political structure of the Kushan Empire reflected its nomadic roots while incorporating elements from the civilizations it encountered. The rulers maintained a centralized authority but allowed local governance to continue in many areas, a practice that helped integrate diverse cultural and ethnic groups into the empire. This pragmatic approach to governance enabled the Kushans to sustain their rule over a vast and multicultural domain.
