Summary

Trapped in the Vega system, the Terrans are finding the universe even more alien than expected. They encounter winged people, an organic building, and—at last—the Ferrons’ three-eyed ruler. When the Topsidans demand surrender, Kakuta hatches a plan to turn the tide with his teleportation ability. But what role do the planet’s mysterious, revered creatures known as “giants” have to play?

Elsewhere, Rhodan meets an elderly Arkonide who has been waiting in a crumbling base for millennia, hoping his commander will one day return. Mistaking Rhodan for that commander, he tells a tale that encompasses the war-torn history of the Ferrons and far more besides...

Meanwhile, Bull and his companions remain prisoners of the Fantan. But with Gucky, their sardonic alien cellmate, they hit on the best possible way to pass the time and create an escape attempt: musical theater! They may not have a script or know all the words, but their performance of The Pirates of Penzance is sure to be a hit.

Bruce Gordon looked at his ticket, grimaced at the ONE WAY stamped on it, then tore it into bits and let the pieces scatter over the floor. He counted them as they fell; thirty pieces in all, one for each year of his life. Little ones for the two years he'd wasted as a cop. Shreds for the four years as a kid in the ring before that--he'd never made the top. Bigger bits for two years also wasted in trying his hand at professional gambling; and the six final pieces that spelled his rise from special reporter helping out with a police shake-up coverage, through a regular leg-man turning up rackets, and on up like a meteor until.... He'd made his big scoop, all right. He'd dug up enough about the Mercury scandals to double circulation. And the government had explained what a fool he'd been for printing half of a story that was never supposed to be printed until all could be revealed. They'd given Bruce Gordon his final assignment... (Summary by Christian Alexander and Excerpt of Chapter 1)

Alex is bored. He's tired of being a sales rep for a communications company, and getting sent off regularly to the middle of nowhere.
Luckily, he sees a golden opportunity: the chance to swap with Daavi, one of the company's contractors, skipping off to a tropical island instead, to help Daavi's business partner Fran implement a new accounting system. Alex jumps at the chance for a sunny, low-key adventure, and trades places with him, dragging his junior colleague Vivica along for the ride.
But Alex has forgotten that 'adventure' and 'vacation' aren't the same thing. He finds that island life has its pitfalls.
Daavi isn't off the hook either: He's to travel out to a job site suspended over a ravine in a nature preserve. Aside from being mildly terrified of heights, Daavi has brought along his best friend Darryl, and their expectant wives, Millie and Stella, which might not have been the best idea with a vengeful, disgruntled ex-employee from Alex's company skulking around with a personal axe to grind.
To top it all off, Millie's baby is almost due, and expecting Drachen mothers can be, as Daavi puts it "adorably unpredictable."
This could all end without incident. But it's unlikely.
