Beschreibung

A traveler returns to his ancestral town of Kingsport for a traditional yuletide observance, only to find the streets empty and the atmosphere oppressive. He is led by mute relatives into a subterranean cavern where a blasphemous rite takes place beneath the earth. The story evokes a sense of ancient, pre-human tradition surviving beneath the veneer of civilization. It is a suffocating tale of heritage and the realization that some family traditions are better left forgotten.

Arnold Bennett was born in 1867 in Hanley one of the six towns that formed the Potteries that later joined together to become Stoke on Trent; the area in which most of his works are located. For a short time he worked for his solicitor father before realising that to advance his life he would need to become his own man. Moving to London at twenty-one he obtained work as a solicitor’s clerk and gradually moved into a career of journalism. At the turn of the century he turned full time to writing and shortly thereafter in 1903 he moved to Paris and in 1908 published to great acclaim The Old Wives Tale. With this his reputation was set. Clayhanger and The Old Wives Tale are perhaps his greatest and most lauded novels.

Written in 1816, when she was only nineteen Mary Shelley’s novel of “The Modern Prometheus” chillingly dramatised the dangerous potential of life begotten upon a laboratory table. A frightening creation myth for our own time. Frankenstein remains one of the greatest horror stories ever written and is an undisputed classic of its kind.

    Description:
The Diary of a Madman by Guy de Maupassant is a chilling study of psychological horror and the fragility of sanity. First published in 1885, it presents the private writings of a respected judge whose outward civility hides a dark descent into obsession and cruelty.
Told through the intimate form of diary entries, the story reveals the gradual unraveling of a mind — a voice both rational and terrifyingly unhinged. Maupassant strips away the veneer of normalcy to expose the horrors lurking within the human psyche.
This recording, narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, captures the eerie intimacy and creeping dread that defines Maupassant’s tale. While the text is in the public domain, this performance is an original work and copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.
This audiobook is part of Timeless Terrors, a dedicated series bringing classic horror back to life — stories from the great masters of the macabre, narrated afresh to haunt a new generation.
Listeners should be prepared for an unsettling exploration of madness, hidden violence, and the shadows that dwell in ordinary men.
