Among all the various figures in 19th century America who left controversial legacies, it is hard to find one as influential as Joseph Smith (1805-1844), the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mormonism, and the Latter-Day Saint movement. Revered as a prophet on the level of Moses by some, reviled as a perpetrator of large-scale fraud by others, what everyone can agree on is that Joseph Smith founded a religious movement that played a crucial role in the settlement of the West, especially in Utah.
Smith’s death was one of the catalysts for the Mormons’ great migration to Utah, and today that state and the Mormons are virtually synonymous. To this day, Mormons still form a majority of the population, and members of the Church have prominent political and economic roles. Among the most effective methods by which the Latter-Day Saints attained regional dominance was the flooding of specific areas with a like-minded population of fellow settlers and offspring, subsequently controlling the voting and government institutions through a weighty majority. Such an approach caused alarm in each region to which Mormon settlers emigrated; the church collective had already been evicted from New York and other areas for exercising the tactic. The practice of polygamy within the church may have been socially repugnant to Judaic and Christian denominations, but the schism between Mormonism and other American faiths lay deeper. This theological separatism caused the Mormon community to live apart, except in the pursuit of converts. The church became increasingly perceived as “un-American,” and over time hostile to and dismissive of those living outside the faith. In time, the Mormon belief that its members were the only heirs to the kingdom of God justified the commission of crimes, including murder. The non-Mormon population responded in kind.

So ancient was Totemism in Egypt that the Totems of the human Mothers had become the signs of Goddesses, in whom the head of the beast was blended with the figure of the human female. The Totems of the human Mothers had attained the highest status as Totems of a Motherhood that was held to be divine, the Motherhood in Nature which was elemental in its origin. --from "Totemism, Tattoo and Fetishism as Forms of Sign Language" It goes unappreciated by modern Egyptologists, but it is embraced by those who savor the concept of a "hidden history" of humanity, and those who approach all human knowledge from the perspective of the esoteric. Gerard Massey's massive Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World--first published in 1907 and the crowning achievement of the self-taught scholar--redefines the roots of Christianity via Egypt, proposing that Egyptian mythology was the basis for Jewish and Christian beliefs. Here, Cosimo proudly presents Book 2 of Ancient Egypt, in which Massey reads the prehistoric story of human civilization that can be studied in the language of ceremonial rites, ancient customs, and ritual dance, and consequently explores the resultant concept that religion evolved out of expressions of human fertility and sexuality--particularly as embodied in the primeval symbols of blood, sacrifice, and motherhood--and formed the first influences on Judeo-Christianity. Peculiar and profound, this work will intrigue and delight readers of history, religion, and mythology. British author GERALD MASSEY (1828-1907) published works of poetry, spiritualism, Shakespearean criticism, and theology, but his best-known works are in the realm of Egyptology, including A Book of the Beginnings and The Natural Genesis.

The Nile River was the lifeblood of ancient Egypt, shaping its civilization, economy, and culture. Flowing over 4,000 miles from the heart of Africa to the Mediterranean Sea, the river provided a reliable source of water in an otherwise arid landscape. Without the Nile, Egypt as we know it would not have existed.
Each year, the river’s annual flooding deposited nutrient-rich silt onto the surrounding land, creating fertile soil ideal for agriculture. This natural cycle allowed the Egyptians to grow crops such as wheat, barley, and flax, sustaining a thriving population. The predictability of the flooding led to the development of an agricultural calendar, which played a crucial role in the organization of society. Farmers planted their crops after the waters receded and harvested them before the next flood, ensuring a steady food supply.
Beyond agriculture, the Nile was also Egypt’s main highway. With deserts on either side of the river, travel by land was difficult, but the Nile provided an efficient means of transportation. Boats carried goods, people, and even large stone blocks for temple and pyramid construction. Trade flourished as the Egyptians exchanged gold, papyrus, and linen for exotic products from neighboring regions, including spices from the east and cedarwood from Lebanon.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It is often considered a fundamental aspect of human connection, influencing how we relate to those around us. Whether it's offering a comforting word, understanding someone’s pain, or celebrating another's joy, empathy allows us to build meaningful relationships. It is more than just recognizing another person’s emotions; it involves feeling with them and, when appropriate, offering support. In a world where individuals often experience feelings of isolation or disconnection, empathy is a bridge that can bring people closer.
Empathy is not simply an emotional reaction; it is a skill that can be nurtured and developed. It plays a key role in many aspects of life, from personal relationships to professional environments. In fact, research has shown that individuals with a higher level of empathy are often better at problem-solving and conflict resolution. By understanding others' emotions, they are more likely to approach situations with sensitivity and tact, which leads to better outcomes in both personal and professional settings.
The science behind empathy is fascinating. Studies in neuroscience have revealed that when we experience empathy, certain areas of our brain light up, particularly the regions involved in emotional processing. This means that empathy is not just a learned behavior, but something deeply ingrained in our biological makeup. It involves both the emotional brain, which processes feelings, and the cognitive brain, which helps us interpret and understand those feelings. This dual process allows us to connect with others in a way that goes beyond intellectual understanding, allowing us to resonate with their experiences on a deeper, more personal level.
