Beschreibung

Charles Horton Cooley's "Social Process" is a seminal work that delves into the intricate interdependencies of social interactions and the collective dynamics that shape human behavior. With a focus on the fluidity of social relations, Cooley employs a reflective and analytical literary style, bringing forth a nuanced exploration of concepts such as social development, community, and the self in relation to society. His work is firmly situated within the realm of early 20th-century sociology, marking a critical shift toward understanding social phenomena as processes rather than static configurations. Cooley, a prominent figure in the Chicago School of Sociology, drew upon his experiences and academic background to articulate the complexities of social life. His theoretical insights were influenced by his desire to integrate individual psychology with social structures, emphasizing the importance of subjective experiences in comprehending societal frameworks. This perspective was not merely academic; it was deeply anchored in his commitment to fostering democratic values and understanding the implications of social change during a transformative era in American society. Readers interested in sociology, social psychology, or the interplay between individual and society will find "Social Process" a valuable text. Cooley's ability to synthesize observations from everyday life with profound theoretical implications makes this book a must-read for anyone seeking to grasp the forces that underlie social phenomena, offering timeless insights that resonate in contemporary discussions of social dynamics.

In The Subversive Seventies, Michael Hardt sets out to show that popular understandings of the political movements of the seventies—often seen as fractious, violent, and largely unsuccessful—are not just inaccurate, but foreclose valuable lessons for the political struggles of today. While many accounts of the 1970s have been written about the regimes of domination that emerged throughout the decade, Hardt approaches the subversive from the perspectives of those who sought to undermine the base of established authority and transform the fundamental structures of society. In so doing, he provides a novel account of the theoretical and practical projects of liberation that still speak to us today, too many of which have been all but forgotten.

The movements of the seventies responded directly to emerging neoliberal frameworks and other structures of power that continue to rule over us today. They identified and confronted political problems that remain central for us. The 1970s, in this sense, marks the beginning of our time. Looking at a wide range of movements around the globe, from the United States, to Guinea Bissau, South Korea, Chile, Turkey, and Italy, The Subversive Seventies provides a reassessment of the political action of the 1970s that sheds new light not only on our revolutionary past but also on what liberation can be and do today.

STRESS HAS BECOME A FACT OF LIFE for far too many people today. Until now, the treatment of stress has mostly focused on behavioral changes, combined with talking about and noticing every thought, feeling, and sensation. But according to the metacognitive approach, this excessive focus on the self is what actually creates the problem. Worrying and ruminating are not simply a symptom of stress, but the causes of stress, preventing stress sufferers from fostering real change. Real change can only occur when the metacognitive management systems underlying behaviour are addressed by focusing not on what, but on how stress sufferers respond to their thinking. The thought is not important, but how they react to it, makes the difference.
This book comprises concrete examples of how a course of metacognitive therapy can be planned. The reader is invited into the therapy room to learn: how to apply the exercises of this method; what to remember during the therapy process; and which questions are important to ask the client. Metacognitive therapy is a part of the third wave of cognitive behavioural therapies and has shown promising results for clients with depression and anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety, social anxiety, PTSD, and OCD. This approach can also be helpful for stress sufferers. First and foremost, the client should learn that their thoughts do not create the problem, but, on the contrary, their response to them does. By applying metacognitive principles, the therapist or practitioner can help the client improve their cognitive management system at the metacognitive level, so that they can choose new and more effective strategies. The client has to reduce their worrying and ruminating before taking action on their actual problem.

    Why Everyone Hates White...

If there's one thing most Americans can agree on, it's that everyone hates white liberals. Conservatives hate them for being culturally tolerant and threatening to usher in communism. Libertarians hate them for believing in the power of the state. Socialists hate them for serving as capitalism's beard. Even liberals hate liberals—either because they can't manage to overcome their own prejudices, or precisely because they're so self-hating. This is the starting point for Kevin M. Schultz's lively new history of white liberals in the United States. He efficiently lays out the array of objections to liberals—ineffective, spineless, judgmental, authoritarian, and more—in a historical frame that shows how protean the concept has been throughout the past hundred years. It turns out, he declares, that how you define a "white liberal" is less a reflection of reality and more a Rorschach test revealing your own anxieties. Sharply assessing how decades of attacks on liberals and liberalism have steadily hollowed out the center of American political life, Schultz also explains precisely what needs to be done to avoid digging ourselves even further into the hole of polarization. The ultimate goal, he argues, is to achieve political fragmentation that will fuel the rise of a true multiparty system, where ideology will matter more, not less.

In January 1988, a happy, healthy twelve-year-old Martin Pistorius came home from school with a sore throat. Soon, he was sleeping all day, refusing meals, and starting to lose his voice.
His doctors were mystified. Within eighteen months, his voice fell silent and his developing mind became trapped inside a body he couldn't control. Mairi Chisholm and Elsie Knocker were two British nurses and ambulance drivers whose staggeringly heroic efforts during World War I saved countless lives and earned them life-long honor. They were especially known for their determination to treat wounded soldiers on the front lines instead of transporting them at great risk to "safer" hospital facilities, even though many of their actions went directly contrary to official bureaucratic regulations. In November of 1914, they took the step for which they are most famous. They decided to leave the corps and set up their own dressing station five miles east in a town named Pervyse, north of Ypres, just one hundred yards from the trenches. Here, in a vacant cellar which they named the "Poste de Secours Anglais" ("British First Aid Post"), the two would spend the next three and a half years aiding the wounded in the Belgian sector. Knocker gave most of the medical attention, while Chisholm transported the injured, often in terrible conditions and under fire, to a base hospital 15 miles away. No longer affiliated with the Belgian Red Cross, they were forced to raise their own funds. With donations they arranged for the cellar to be reinforced with concrete and even have a steel door fitted, supplied by Harrods. Through sheer perseverance Knocker was able to arrange for the two of them to be officially seconded to the Belgian garrison stationed there. Equipped with cameras, both women photographed not only each other but also much of the suffering around them. In January 1915, they were rewarded for their courageous work on the front lines when they were both decorated by King Albert I of Belgium with the Order of Léopold II, Knights Cross. In this account, Geraldine Edith Mitton has acted as more than an editor; she has taken the muddy journals and "home letters" of "the Two" (as she continually and reverently refers to Knocker and Chisholm) and created out of them a lucid, eloquent, and coherent story of two heroic individuals doing their part on the Western Front.
