'Jimmy and the Desperate Woman' tells the improbable story of an intellectual editor persuading a working woman to live with him. We would say now 'on the rebound' from a failed marriage but Lawrence crosses the class divide and poses questions about what makes us attracted to other people. The intellectual twists and turns of the magazine editor contrast nicely with the stark honesty of the spurned miner husband.

The Island of Doctor Moreau is an 1896 science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells. The text of the novel is the narration of Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man rescued by a passing boat who is left on the island home of Doctor Moreau, a mad scientist who creates human-like hybrid beings from animals via vivisection. The novel deals with a number of philosophical themes, including pain and cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity, and human interference with nature. Wells described it as "an exercise in youthful blasphemy."
The Island of Doctor Moreau is a classic of early science fiction and remains one of Wells' best-known books. The novel is the earliest depiction of the science fiction motif "uplift" in which a more advanced race intervenes in the evolution of an animal species to bring the latter to a higher level of intelligence.
Famous works of the author Herbert Wells: "The Time Machine", "The War of the Worlds", "The War in the Air", "The Island of Dr. Moreau", "The Complete Science Fiction Treasury of H.G. Wells", "The Invisible Man", "When the Sleeper Wakes", "The First Men in the Moon", "The Food of the Gods", "The Magic Shop".

“The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.”
Initially met with controversy and censorship, The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only novel by the incomparable Oscar Wilde. It is bursting with his trademark wit, his love of art, and his embrace of life and all it has to offer.
Dorian, fearful of age and the subsequent fading of his beauty, expresses a wish: that a glorious oil portrait of him suffers the burden of age, and not him. He would sell his soul for it. Unfortunately for him, the wish is granted.
Through Dorian, Oscar Wilde weaves an unforgettable tale about the punishment of excess and misplaced desire.
Told in an exquisite blend of the Gothic and the philosophical, this fable about our obsession with the aesthetic unravels a horrifying truth: it is not if, but when and where our sins will manifest.
