Beschreibung

The Darkness of Castle Otranto illuminates the interplay between Gothic shadows and Enlightenment ideals through a carefully curated collection that deftly explores the human psyche's cavernous depths. This anthology presents classic Gothic motifs such as haunted castles, familial secrets, and the supernatural, inviting readers into a maze of dark corridors and haunting atmospheres. The works within this volume span diverse literary styles from suspense-laden narratives to rich, descriptive passages that evoke a palpable sense of dread and wonder, showcasing the labyrinthine complexity and timelessness of the Gothic tradition. This anthology bridges the foundational contributions of authors such as Horace Walpole and Clara Reeve, whose works are seminal in the Gothic literary movement. Their narratives reflect a world in transition, capturing the tension between emerging rationalist thought and the enchantment of dark romance. Reeve's and Walpole's stories resonate with historical echoes that continue to influence contemporary Gothic literature, encouraging a reevaluation of cultural anxieties and individual fears reflective of their eras. Together, these authors open a dialogue that not only illuminates the thematic core of the Gothic but also situates their works within a broader literary and cultural context. The Darkness of Castle Otranto offers readers an unparalleled foray into Gothic literature's mysterious and intricate world. By engaging with this anthology, readers are afforded the unique opportunity to witness how these distinctive voices converge to elevate and redefine the Gothic scope. Whether for scholarly exploration or sheer literary enjoyment, this volume promises a captivating journey into the Gothic imagination's depths and enduring allure.

Arthur Llewelyn Jones was born in Caerleon, Monmouthshire on the 3rd March 1863.

Machen came from a long line of clergymen, and when he was two, his father became vicar of a small parish about five miles north of Caerleon, and Machen was brought up at the rectory there.

In his early years he received an excellent classical education, but family poverty ruled out university, and he was sent to London to sit exams to attend medical school but failed the exams. He did show literary promise with the publication of the poem ‘Eleusinia’ in 1821. But life in London was difficult and it was only in 1884 that he published again and was taken on to translate several French works which thereafter became the standard editions for many years.

In 1887, his father died. That same year he married Amelia Hogg, a maverick music teacher with a passion for the theatre. He also began to receive legacies from Scottish relatives which allowed him to devote more time to writing.

After publishing in literary magazines in 1894 he published his first book ‘The Great God Pan’. Its sexual and horrific content very much helped sales.

Over the next decade or so he wrote some of his best work but was unable to find a publisher mainly due to the collapse of the decadent market over Oscar Wilde’s scandalous trial.

In 1899, his wife died and during his long recovery he took up acting and travelled around the country as part of a travelling company. Three years later he was publishing again and had remarried.

Re-publishing of earlier works helped anchor both his reputation and his income. By the time the Great War opened Europe’s wounds he returned to the public eye with ‘The Bowmen’ helped by the publicity around the ‘Angel of Mons’ episode.

However, by the late 20’s new works had dried up and his back catalogue was no longer a source of regular income.

In 1932 he received a Civil List pension of ₤100 per annum but other work was not forthcoming. His finances finally stabilised with a literary appeal in 1943 for his eightieth birthday and allowed him to live his remaining years in relative comfort.

Arthur Machen died on 15th December 1947 in Beaconsfield. He was 84.

Everyone has secrets, some deadlier than others. Psychic Ryley St. James's secrets threaten to kill her, and now both the living and the dead are out for blood.

There's nothing that Ryley hates worse than her father, but serial killers rank a close second. Alive or dead, they're all the same—they need to be stopped. When a ghostly serial killer torments a young girl, Ryley must put an end to his reign of terror and figure out a way to shove him into the great beyond.

But when a fellow psychic turns up dead, and another one suddenly goes missing, Ryley suspects that it's not just the ghostly threats she needs to worry about. There's also a live predator lurking somewhere in the shadows.

As she gets closer to the truth, she's forced to confront her own personal demons. Her father's sinister presence is getting dangerously close to her life, the reapers are demanding answers, and the ghostly serial killer wants to add her to his body count.

It's not a matter of if she'll die but who will get credit for killing her first.

Can she keep it together long enough to battle the secrets from her past and deal with these new killers before it's too late?

    p>Edinburgh 1841.

Reaching out like a hungry white worm it twisted and spiralled, tasting the air. Then, evidently attracted by the flow of warm blood, it squirmed its way under the surface of my skin.
Every autumn without fail, a strange seed appears on the chestnut tree that marks the spot where the witch Margaret McKay was murdered.
Legend states that anyone who catches this nut before it hits the ground will be blessed with untold riches, but when it falls into the eager hands of botanist Joseph Ware, the seed unleashes a terrible curse. In his quest to find the cure, Joseph discovers a resistance group battling to save the last of Scotland's witches from a sinister order of surgeons who believe the key to all magic lies hidden somewhere within a witch's anatomy.
The conflict quickly tears apart the bonds of family, friendship and even reality itself, as Joseph fights to save his soul and avoid the anatomists' dissecting table.
Ideal for readers of The Last Witch in Scotland, The Witches of Vardo, Bram Stoker or for those with an interest in witchcraft lore.
