Synopsis

History Encounters unearths the greatest stories with the major events from Minoan Civilization to expand reader horizons for readers to be best informed.

Who were the Minoans? This ancient Bronze Age civilization has left historians and archaeologists puzzled. While other Bronze Age civilizations follow a typical pattern, the Minoans were such an advanced culture that some experts believed that they could be the lost tribe of Atlantis, which was a mystical city described by Plato and, apparently, populated by half gods/half men.

And why did Minoan culture disappear in the space of a few hundred years? Was it a volcano? Deforestation? Invasion by a greater force? The answers must be painstakingly found from the dust in archaeological sites, and the results are fascinating.

Learning about history will keep you perceptive and make sure to not repeat mistakes that others made in the past. The different stories in this series will show the readers that history should not just be seen from one perspective, but from the different eyes of the groups of people involved. You never know, you might finally understand their choices, their actions and their reactions.

In this historical series, you will discover:

The history of different countries and cultures
The inner workings of major historical turning points in different countries.
Different perspectives of major events in history
The reasons behind different wars or battles throughout history

These historical series are for anyone who wants to learn fun, exciting and influential facts of what happened years before their time. Do you want to learn history through a multitude of different eyes?

Get the best from accelerating social change with the new audiobook from the bestselling author of 2030 and “acclaimed thought leader” (Kirkus), Mauro Guillén. Adam Grant praises how the book "invites us to rethink our careers, our families, and our future plans.” Find out why business leaders and bestselling authors around the world are calling it "sharply relevant and necessary" (William P. Lauder), "insightful and deeply researched" (Richard Florida), and "a must read" (Mohammed A. El-Erian). In today’s world, the acceleration of megatrends – increasing longevity and the explosion of technology among many others – are transforming life as we now know it.In The Perennials, bestselling author of 2030 Mauro Guillén unpacks a sweeping societal shift triggered by demographic and technological transformation. Guillén argues that outmoded terms like Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z have long been used to pigeonhole us into rigid categories and life stages, artificially preventing people from reaching their full potential. A new postgenerational workforce known as “perennials” – individuals who are not pitted against each other either by their age or experience – makes it possible to liberate scores of people from the constraints of the sequential model of life and level the playing field so that everyone has a chance at living a rewarding life. Guillén unveils how this generational revolution will impact young people just entering the workforce as well as those who are living and working longer. This multigenerational revolution is already happening and Mauro Guillén identifies the specific cultural, organizational and policy changes that need to be made in order to switch to a new template and usher in a new era of innovation powered by the perennials.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

And where is the force that can fulfill the unfinished promise of Iran's Constitutional Revolution? In three words: The Iranian Citizenry. Thirty years before Iran's Constitutional Revolution, the treatise One Word (Yek Kalameh) ignited a movement, challenging absolute monarchy, advocating the rule of law, and empowering the people. The Thirty Years' War was one of the most horrific conflicts in history, and though it is widely viewed as a religious struggle, that was only part of the complicated war. Calvinists and Lutherans did not get along, and both persecuted some of the more radical Anabaptist sects. At the same time, one major motivation behind the war was Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II’s determination to rule all of the empire and not be just a figurehead. There were struggles between rulers and their estates over power, and Catholic France later entered the war on the side of the Protestants in order to counter the Habsburgs’ power.
The Battle of Breitenfeld, fought in September 1631, was one of the most decisive moments of the war. It was the first major Protestant victory and widely considered the crowning achievement of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus’ military career. Through his establishment of communication and supply lines at strategic points across the Baltic Sea, the securing of Protestant alliances, and his use of combined arms, amongst his other trademark techniques, the Swedish forces, against all odds, defeated their rivals. Such was the devastation inflicted upon their opponents that the Count of Tilly, the chief commander of the Catholic League's armies, had no other choice but to retreat. 6,000 or so Catholic soldiers were captured, many of them later incorporated into the Protestant forces. Whatever remained of the survivors vanished into the dark of the night.
