Synopsis

This is the Māori language edition of Te Hiakai Tangata:The Taniwha of Tuarā-Rangaia. This is a story of a taniwha that lives beside a track between villages and menaces travellers and the surrounding iwi. When a chief's son is taken by the taniwha, Te Hiakai, the people devise many plans to trap and kill the taniwha, but each time Te Hiakai outwits them. In the end, Pōhutukawa, a chief's daughter, speaks to the taniwha. Through her words a spell is broken, and the taniwha transforms into a young warrior, Te Haeata, who had been cursed by a tohunga long ago. Pōhutukawa and Te Haeata fall in love and live out their lives together. But Te Haeata never quite shakes off the spell, and in old age, he transforms into an eel and becomes a guardian in the Rangitāiki river.

With his summer headed downhill fast, thirteen-year-old Justin faces a tricky choice—stand up to bigotry or let fear hold him back. When he's targeted by a bully, and a good friend stops speaking to him, Justin counts on help from Leroy Usher, the ghost whose magical carnival helped transform Justin's life after his father died last year. So this should be a breeze, right?

His expectations rise further when a mysterious message from Mr. Usher invites him and pals Darby and Naz for a midnight visit. Instead of a reunion, though, the kids find themselves transported through time to unravel a mystery that tore Mr. Usher's family apart. As Justin digs for the truth, he discovers that Mr. Usher faced challenges during his lifetime with courage . . . and without magic. But if courage is what it takes, Justin must learn to do what's right when everything's wrong.

Biggest goes first – always. That’s one of the unspoken rules of Kiln, the forbidden wasteland where Sam and his mates hang out. So when Sam comes up with a plan to go sledging on the rust-ridden bonnet of a rotting car, he goes first. To show the others how it’s done.
His mates aren’t so keen. But there’s no complaining. No backing down. Those are the other rules of Kiln. Even when they lead to disaster.
Will their friendship survive the wreckage that follows, or is it time for the rules to be changed?
