Beschreibung

In "The History of Catholic Europe," Hilaire Belloc masterfully intertwines narrative and analysis to present a comprehensive exploration of the Catholic Church's profound influence on European history. Written in a compelling prose that combines personal reflections with rigorous scholarship, Belloc delves into the intricate tapestry of political, cultural, and spiritual dynamics that have shaped Europe. He articulates the role of Catholicism not merely as a religion but as a foundational element of European identity, tracing the Church's evolution from the early Middle Ages through the Enlightenment and into modernity, all while providing a distinct counterpoint to secular historical narratives. Hilaire Belloc, an accomplished historian, writer, and political activist, was profoundly shaped by his own Catholic faith. Born in 1870 to French parents before settling in England, Belloc'Äôs experiences with nationalism and his critique of modern secularism deeply informed his writings. His works reflect a passionate defense of Catholic tradition against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world, positioning him as a crucial figure in the early 20th-century literary landscape. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the integral role of Catholicism in shaping European civilization. Belloc's incisive insights and authentic voice make it accessible to both scholars and general readers alike, reaffirming the relevance of Catholic heritage in contemporary society.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and his ideology was disseminated through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.

Emerson gradually moved away from the religious and social beliefs of his contemporaries, formulating and expressing the philosophy of transcendentalism in his 1836 essay "Nature". Following this work, he gave a speech entitled "The American Scholar" in 1837, which Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. considered to be America's "intellectual Declaration of Independence."

Emerson wrote most of his important essays as lectures first and then revised them for print. His first two collections of essays, Essays: First Series and Essays: Second Series, represent the core of his thinking. They include the well-known essays "Self-Reliance", "The Over-Soul", "Circles", "The Poet", and "Experience." Together with "Nature", these essays made the decade from the mid-1830s to the mid-1840s Emerson's most fertile period. Emerson wrote on a number of subjects, never espousing fixed philosophical tenets, but developing certain ideas such as individuality, freedom, the ability for mankind to realize almost anything, and the relationship between the soul and the surrounding world. Emerson's "nature" was more philosophical than naturalistic: "Philosophically considered, the universe is composed of Nature and the Soul." Emerson is one of several figures who "took a more pantheist or pandeist approach by rejecting views of God as separate from the world."

Includes maps, photos, and firsthand accounts of participants: “There is no better book on this vital chapter in American history.” —Terry Copp, author of Fields of Fire   Combining the personal recollections of soldiers with historical narrative and analysis of the actual invasion as it unfolded, this detailed description of the action at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion of World War II comes from “the top living D-Day historian” (USA Today).   “Anyone who wants to know anything about Omaha Beach, where the fighting was heaviest and bloodiest, must begin with this foundational book…The research is unparalleled and comprehensive enough to satisfy even the most skeptical scholar, yet the story is absorbing. The carnage of Omaha Beach comes to life with vivid contemporary descriptions from participants and witnesses, while the whole tale is deftly steered along by Balkoski’s steady narration and his sense of the battle’s larger significance. ‘History can provide at least a little solace that there was some meaning to it all,’ he writes movingly. ‘D-Day was the decisive chapter of a twentieth century Iliad.’ Indeed it was—and Balkoski is its Homer.” —The Wall Street Journal   “Balkoski makes officer and enlisted-men’s first-person testimony the center of this account.” —Publishers Weekly   “Intensely researched and definitive.” —Army magazine   “Balkoski’s depiction of ‘Bloody Omaha’ is the literary accompaniment to the white-knuckle Omaha Beach scene that opens Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan.” —The New York Post   “The best D-Day-related book I have read.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
