In "The Great Inquiry," Hilaire Belloc delves into a profound exploration of societal and philosophical issues, employing a blend of witty prose and rigorous argumentation characteristic of his literary style. This work, steeped in the socio-political context of early 20th-century Europe, challenges prevailing ideologies and seeks to unravel the complexities of modern civilization. Belloc'Äôs inquiry is marked by a keen observational lens, illuminating the moral and cultural dilemmas of his era, while also reflecting on timeless human experiences. Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953), a prominent figure in English literature and public thought, was a staunch advocate for various political and ecclesiastical causes. His diverse background'Äîranging from his French Catholic heritage to his upbringing in England'Äîimbued him with a unique perspective on the cultural conflicts of his time. This nuanced understanding of tradition and change undoubtedly informed his desire to pose critical questions about the direction of society, making "The Great Inquiry" not merely a book, but a manifesto addressing the urgent moral crises of the day. My Secret Life, the anonymously written erotic memoirs of a Victorian English gentleman who refers to himself simply as 'Walter' is one of the most idiosyncratic and prurient books ever written. Through this compelling exploration of the author's sexual and moral behaviour we are left with a uniquely entertaining insight into life behind the closed doors of Victorian society. My Secret Life is funny, sorrowful, suspenseful, compulsively readable, obscene, titillating, exciting and erotic...we are privy to the thoughts, emotions and memories of one of the most unusual, unsung and colourful characters of the Victorian era.

Now, for the first time, the complete unabridged version of this unique and important text is being narrated and scored by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins as an 'audiofilm' (an audiobook in which the emotional landscape is explored through the music score). Each chapter of My Secret Life will be released at monthly intervals over the next ten to fifteen years culminating in a lifetime's work for the composer and what is likely to become the longest audio book ever to be produced.

A heartfelt, honest and witty account of a young doctor's first year of practice, filled with unforgettable characters and surprising events. Dr. Mathur is thrown in the deep end by a rural Texas hospital. He arrives to find that the hospital is bankrupt and has almost no resources. He faces opposition from the other two doctors, suspicion from the people, and the challenges of being an immigrant in the Bible Belt. He is also a husband and father of two curious and lively little girls. In the course of that fateful first year, his frustrating, terrifying and often hilarious encounters in the hospital are interwoven with moving stories about his wife and children. In the ER, he treats emergencies like cardiac arrests, collapsed lungs, and impaled limbs, and at home, he works to create a calm and peaceful refuge. In the course of that momentous year, he gradually wins the confidence of the townspeople by his skills, sincerity, and compassion. He tries to spend time with his family, but often ends up rushing back to care for a patient. This poignant memoir takes the reader into a doctor's life at an intimate level. It shows that the harsh demands of a medical life can be tempered with laughter, sincerity, and humility, to create a life that is truly rewarding and inspiring.

The human psyche is one of the most complex, unpredictable, enigmatic, and therefore riveting phenomena in existence, one that psychologists have been working on deciphering since the dawn of modern science. To better understand the multifaceted intricacies of human behavior, and to unlock the secrets of the conscious mind and the subconscious, ambitious professionals in the field have conducted numerous groundbreaking – and at times, problematic – psychological experiments. The practice originated with German philosopher Wilhelm Wundt, one of the fathers of modern psychology and the creator of the world's first experimental psychology laboratory at the University of Leipzig. He sought to measure the average speed of thought processes by assigning a range of reaction time tasks to his subjects.
As the nascent, yet fast-developing scientific discipline took hold around the globe, psychological experiments simultaneously diversified. As revolutionary and eye-opening as many of these experiments were, they often danced on the fine line between ethical and unethical. There was, for instance, the now-infamous Little Albert Experiment, conducted at Johns Hopkins University in 1920, in which a nine-month-old infant was deliberately manipulated into developing an irrational fear for the purpose of studying classical conditioning, and the correlation between adult fears and childhood traumas. The Monster Study, carried out at the University of Iowa in 1939, attempted to convert orphans into stutterers, half of whom were subjected to positive reinforcements and the others to negative ones. Then, there was arguably the most notorious psychological experiment in history: the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, in which participants were randomly assigned the character of either prisoner or prison guard. That role-playing study quickly spiraled out of control.

Peter Bland's life has always been about overcoming challenges and taking that extra step, but sometimes it's a step too far. Like the time he stepped from his tent during and unsupported crossing of the Antarctic peninsula and was swept away by an avalanche ending up unconscious and near death 40 metres down a crevasse. Or the time he dived under a stricken yacht adrift among icebergs in the Southern Ocean on a voyage to the South Magnetic Pole - without a wetsuit and with the external air temperature minus 60 degrees Celsius - in order to free a rope that was wrapped around the propeller. Or how a year after major heart surgery to repair a massive aneurysm he dragged a sled 650 kilometres across the Arctic to become the first Australian to have reached both magnetic poles.

A Step Too Far is Peter's story. It is a tale of gripping adventure and survival in some of the planet's most inhospitable regions, as well as a profound insight into what drives a person to take such risks in the search for new adrenalin highs, and the strains and stresses it places on those who love them. A Step Too Far is an exciting and utterly absorbing study of a great Australian adventurer.

American presidents have shaped the course of global affairs for generations, but as the saying goes, behind every great man there’s a great woman. While the First Ladies often remain overshadowed by their husbands, some have carved unique niches in their time and left their own lasting legacy. Dolley Madison helped establish the role of the First Lady in the early 1800s, Eleanor Roosevelt gave voice to policy issues in a way that made her a forerunner of First Ladies like Hillary Clinton, and Jackie Kennedy created glamorous trends that made her more popular than her husband.
Eleanor Roosevelt and Hillary Clinton may have been the most politically active First Ladies in American history, but Abigail Adams was the first to act as political advisor for her husband and the first to be dubbed “Mrs. President”. Indeed, Abigail was politically inclined to degree highly unusual among women of the 18th and 19th century, and she had originally impressed her future husband John because she was so well versed in poetry, philosophy and politics. Abigail was also very progressive, championing women’s rights and abolition long before they became widely held views even in traditionally liberal Massachusetts.
In addition to being instrumental in decorating the White House, Dolley Madison also set the standard for the First Lady’s traditional hosting and ceremonial duties. 150 years later, Jackie Kennedy was largely credited for helping boost her husband’s popularity during their time in the White House, but the same could easily be said about Dolley, who was renowned for her social graces and her hospitality. Having helped boost her husband’s popularity during his presidency, Dolley went about maintaining his legacy after 1836, collecting and organizing the papers and notes of the Constitution’s most influential drafter, and eventually selling them to the government in full.
