Synopsis

In "The Complete Novels of Herman Melville: Sea Tales, Maritime Adventures & Philosophical Novels," readers are invited to embark on a literary voyage through Melville's profound exploration of the human condition, encapsulated in his vivid depictions of the sea and its metaphorical significance. This comprehensive collection integrates Melville'Äôs seafaring narratives with his deep philosophical inquiries, characterized by rich symbolism and complex characterizations. Through masterful prose, he combines elements of adventure, existential contemplation, and social criticism, establishing a unique voice that continues to resonate in American literature, particularly within the Transcendentalist movement and its responses to Romanticism. Herman Melville, born in 1819, was heavily influenced by his early maritime experiences as a sailor in the Pacific, which informed his understanding of the sea as both a physical and metaphysical realm. His works reflect the tension between nature and civilization, grappling with themes of isolation, fate, and the conflict of individual morality versus societal expectations. Melville'Äôs extensive travels and encounters with diverse cultures fostered a unique worldview, positioning him as a pioneer of American realism and inquiry into the human psyche. This anthology is essential for scholars and general readers alike, offering a comprehensive insight into one of America's most enigmatic literary figures. It stands as not only a historical artifact but also a profound philosophical treatise, making it a must-read for those seeking to understand the intricacies of human experience as articulated through the lens of the restless seas.

Not since Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan has a fiction writer explored with such powerful intensity the experience of being Asian American. The characters who inhabit this extraordinary fictional debut are caught between the burden of their past history and the fragility of their unchartered future. Hunger illuminates how first-generation immigrants from China, culturally and emotionally uprooted from their homeland, mistrust connection even as they hunger for attachment—and how the past affects and shapes their children.

In luminous prose, these stories of love and loss explore the profound and painful ties between husband and wife, parent and child, sister and sister. The stunning title novella is told by a woman whose love for an exiled musician compels her into a tragic marriage in which her husband's unfulfilled desires nearly destroy their children. In other stories, a ghost seduces a young girl into a flooded river; a mother commands a daughter to avenge her father's death.

Lan Samantha Chang weaves the forces of war and magic, food and desire, ghosts and family, into haunting tales. Again and again, Chang asks the question: is love not a kind of burden, stifling and terrifying in the choices and responsibilities it forces on us? And yet we yearn for it, define ourselves by our experience of it, cannot live without it.

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko was born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire on 27th July 1853.

His father died when he was 13 and life was then often struck with bouts of poverty, which resulted in his education being somewhat erratic. A spell in exile at 23 was followed by another as the politics of the times opposed his volatile but heart-felt passions.

Writing was also coming to the fore and in 1879 his debut short story telling of a young Narodnik searching for social and spiritual identity, was published.

In 1881, Korolenko refused to swear allegiance to the new Russian Tsar and was again exiled, this time much farther afield. He spent the next three years doing manual work, but took time to study local customs and history. These impressions in exile provided rich material for his writings.

In 1885 he was allowed to settle in Nizhny, where again he repeatedly questioned the authorities. That same year ‘Makar's Dream’ established his literary reputation and was part of his first collection ‘Sketches and Stories’, the following year.

In the early 1890’s when famine struck Central Russia, he went to work on relief missions, collecting donations, supervising the delivery and distribution of food, opening 45 free canteens, all this while writing the graphic reports that would later be published as ‘In the Year of Famine’ in 1893.

By 1896 despite some psychological disorders, he was well regarded amongst Russian writers and was even a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Throughout his writing career Korolenko was a staunch advocate of human rights, putting that sacred activity above what he called his 'part-time-writing'.

In the Revolutionary year of 1905, under his editorship, Russkoye Bogatstvo published the Manifest by the Petersburg Soviet of the Workers' deputies. Korolenko was now repeatedly harassed by the authorities, had his flat raided many times and materials confiscated.

As a lifetime opponent of Tsarism, he guardedly welcomed the Revolution of 1917. Once the nature of Bolshevism was established, he soon started to criticize it. During the Russian Civil War that ensued, he condemned both the Red Terror and the White Terror.

Despite suffering from a progressive heart disorder, he collected food packages for children in famine-stricken Moscow and Petrograd as well as organised orphanages and shelters for the homeless.

Vladimir Korolenko died in Poltava, Ukraine, of the complications of pneumonia on 25th December 1921. He was 68.

In this story Korolenko invokes the characters of Socrates and Elpidias who, after their deaths, involve themselves in a debate on God. This is a tour-de-force of conception and execution.

It's Halloween at the Baker Valley Barkery and Cafe, which means it's time for a pet costume parade. And when Maggie leaves Sam and Jack in charge of finding contestants the results are definitely...interesting.Note that this is NOT a mystery but does include the characters from the Maggie May and Miss Fancypants Mysteries series and falls chronologically after book four in that series, A Missing Mom and Mutt Munchies. It can, however, also be read as a standalone short story.
