Beschreibung

In "Nine Years Among the Indians: 1870-1879," Herman Lehmann presents a vivid and captivating memoir detailing his extraordinary experiences as a captive among various Native American tribes. Written in the late 19th century, Lehmann's narrative interweaves personal anecdotes with broader historical contexts, offering readers an intimate view of the cultural practices, societal structures, and survival strategies of the tribes he encountered. The prose is both accessible and reflective, capturing the complexities of his dual identity during his years of captivity, marked by moments of awe, fear, and adaptation that resonate with broader themes of conflict and coexistence in American history. Born in 1859 in the German immigrant community of central Texas, Lehmann's early life was shaped by the turbulent environment of the American frontier. Captured at the age of 11, his nine-year journey among the Apache and Comanche tribes provided him with unique insights into the Native American experience, as well as a profound transformation of his worldview. Lehmann's background and the cultural clashes he witnessed inspired not only a deep appreciation for Indigenous cultures but also a critique of the prevailing Euro-American narrative of the time. "Nine Years Among the Indians" is an essential read for historians, anthropologists, and anyone interested in the intricacies of cross-cultural encounters in American history. Lehmann's firsthand account serves as a crucial document that sheds light on life among Native Americans during a formative period in U.S. history, encouraging readers to reconsider preconceived notions of civilization and savagery. His compelling storytelling invites reflection and offers a nuanced perspective that remains relevant in contemporary discussions about cultural identity and historical memory.

      How Can We Help

Ram Dass explains that we must first acknowledge our humanity, if we hope to be an instrument of presence and peace. When we embrace our humanness, we create the space necessary for compassion to arise. We learn to balance the suffering we encounter with the innate empathy of the human heart. We awaken through our life experiences, which become the curriculum for our incarnation. Our humanity itself is the vehicle through which our spirit can manifest. The help we offer is who we are, our very being.

Ram Dass asks us to consider the ways in which our culture’s pervading myth of unbridled individualism has generated the destabilizing forces confronting us. "Injustice is rooted in a frightened heart."To remain open to the tremendous suffering we encounter requires an exquisite balance of the rational mind and intuitive heart. Ram Dass' exploration of practical methods for expanding our awareness without closing our hearts offers a blueprint for how we might navigate an ever-changing universe and return home to that quality of being where there is only one of us.

The Irish Civil War ended in 1923. Eighty years on, documentary-maker Tom Hurley wondered if there were many civilians and combatants left from across Ireland who had experienced the years 1919 to 1923, their prelude and their aftermath. What memories had they, what were their stories and how did they reflect on those turbulent times?
In early 2003, he recorded the experiences of 18 people, conducting 2 further interviews abroad in 2004. Tom spoke to a cross section (Catholic, Protestant, Unionist and Nationalist) who were in their teens or early twenties during the civil war. The chronological approach he has taken spans 50 years, beginning with the oldest interviewee's birth in 1899 and ending when the Free State became a republic in 1949.

Dan Akee was part of the Navajo code talker units of the US Marine Corps that relayed radio and phone messages in their native dialect during World War II operations.

The method was fast and indecipherable to enemy eavesdroppers, as Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity - with its syntax, tonal qualities, and various dialects - making it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols, and is spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest. By one estimate, at the time of World War II, the Navajo language was understood by fewer than 30 non-Navajos.

Approximately 400 Navajo code talkers took part in every assault the US Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions, and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language. The code was never broken by the Japanese, and its security has been credited with contributing significantly to the capture of Iwo Jima in 1945.

The following are two recordings from code talker Dan Akee.
