Beschreibung

This 3-volume book features a comprehensive collection of most significant scientific, political and speculative essays by Herbert Spencer. The first volume is made up of essays in which the idea of evolution, general or special is dominant. In the second volume essays dealing with philosophical questions, with abstract and concrete science, and with aesthetics, are brought together; but though all of them are tacitly evolutionary, their evolutionism is an incidental rather than a necessary trait. The ethical, political, and social essays composing the third volume, though mostly written from the evolution point of view, have for their more immediate purposes the enunciation of doctrines which are directly practical in their bearings. Volume 1: The Development Hypothesis Progress: Its Law and Cause Transcendental Physiology The Nebular Hypothesis Illogical Geology Bain on the Emotions and the Will The Social Organism The Origin of Animal Worship Morals and Moral Sentiments The Comparative Psychology of Man Mr. Martineau on Evolution The Factors of Organic Evolution Volume 2: The Genesis of Science The Classification of the Sciences Reasons for Dissenting From the Philosophy of M. "Boldly blows the lid off a taboo topic. If there’s one book on God to read this year, please make it ‘So Who is God Anyway?’ by G.S. Payne.” —Reader Views
"A well-written and convincing rumination on the divine." --Kirkus Reviews
GS Payne, writer, sleuth, and eternally curious ruminator, investigates 2,500 years-plus of philosophical thought on the subject of God. Using the tools of the philosopher (and a lot of humor), Payne traces the thinking of history's greatest brains to arrive initially at a conclusion on the matter of God's existence; then, a philosophical conception of God that is no less than startling, first because it is nothing like the traditional conception of God (he of the beard and sandals on his throne in the sky), and, second, because it is a conception that not only goes back to the beginning of recorded time, but is recognized by every major religion on earth, and yet has been tragically relegated to the fringes by the louder, more fundamentalist branches of mainstream religion.
So Who is God, Anyway? delivers splendidly-for doubters, skeptics, recovering fundamentalists, or anyone looking for a fun book to read about some damn big questions!

The figures are shocking: 40% of American women and nearly a quarter of American men have been sexually assaulted. While #MeToo stories and the survivors who shared them have helped combat sexual harassment in the workplace, improved police interventions, and resulted in high-profile convictions, the public has only just begun to reckon with the impact sexual assault has on survivors. The ongoing silence points to the still-taboo intersection of two subjects: sexual assault and sexuality.

Sex After Sexual Assault explores this crossroads through the lens of survivors' own stories. Millions of people across the United States experience sexual assault, and 94% of survivors experience symptoms of traumatic stress. These symptoms may affect our sex lives. This crucial book tackles the obstacles a survivor frequently faces while rebuilding a sex life after trauma. Each chapter includes a selection of survivors' stories. These stories illuminate how survivors have navigated their struggles into positive practices and outlooks and reimagined what sex and intimacy can look like.

For survivors it is a guidebook, a road map, true stories to lean on. These are survivors' stories, but the broader picture they paint is for anybody seeking more intentional, connected, and pleasurable sex with the awareness that rape culture impacts everyone.

This New York Times bestseller shares the rich history of the White House grounds, revealing how the story of the garden is also the story of America. The 18-acres surrounding the White House have been an unwitting witness to history—kings and queens have dined there, bills and treaties have been signed, and presidents have landed and retreated. Throughout it all, the grounds have remained not only beautiful, but also a powerful reflection of American trends. In All the Presidents' Gardens bestselling author Marta McDowell tells the untold history of the White House grounds with historical and contemporary photographs, vintage seeds catalogs, and rare glimpses into Presidential pastimes. History buffs will revel in the fascinating tidbits about Lincoln’s goats, Ike's putting green, Jackie's iconic roses, Amy Carter's tree house, and Trump's controversial renovations. Gardeners will enjoy the information on the plants whose favor has come and gone over the years and the gardeners who have been responsible for it all. As one head gardener put it, “What’s great about the job is that our trees, our plants, our shrubs, know nothing about politics.”

The captivating account of how Clint Lorance, a soldier who became a scapegoat for a corrupt military hierarchy, was falsely charged with war crimes, imprisoned, and eventually pardoned by President Trump. While out on patrol in Afghanistan, Clint Lorance learned that two men, both suspected suicide bombers, were speeding toward a crowded city on motorcycles. Lorance couldn't see them, but his men on the ground had clear shots. After a split second, he gave the order to shoot, killing both men. In the months that followed, Lorance was arrested by the military and put on trial for war crimes. Prosecutors claimed that the order he gave constituted an act of premeditated murder, and they sentenced him to twenty years in prison. In Stolen Honor, Lorance finally tells the story of this event and the trial it led to -- how the prosecutors declined to admit clear-cut evidence that would have exonerated him, how the men in his unit turned on him, and why he still believes he was right to give the order to shoot. It is a story that stretches from small-town America to the deserts of Afghanistan, from the White House to the tiny jail cell where Lorance spent six years waiting on his exoneration, which finally came when President Trump pardoned him in 2019. The book also discusses Lorance's plans to attend law school and help reform the broken military justice system.

It Did Happen Here - A History...

    Jeronimo Herodotease

In this satirical alternative history, Professor Jeronimo Herodotease and his team of documentary filmmakers and reenactors revivify the dark days of the Grim Depression and Amerika's descent into dictatorship. In the chaos and strife that followed the assassination of President-elect Frankie van Rosenvelt, General Jackson and a cadre of Forcist-minded cockroaches swarmed the stage, gnawed away at democratic norms, and declared martial law under the guise of restoring "Law and Order." Minorities and illegal aliens were scapegoated for the nation's woes, and dissenters daring to oppose the regime found themselves attacked by the Faux Outlet for News and Entertainment, whisked away to detention camps, or forced into exile. In retelling the stories of radicals and reactionaries, statesmen and demagogues, cultural producers and political censors, Herodotease reveals a polarized Amerika not unlike that of our own contentious age. Woven into the fabric of the narrative are a plethora of vintage photographs, historical artifacts, and propaganda art, all courtesy of The Wolfsonian–Florida International University. While included with the aim of bringing the persons and events of the 1930s back to life, many of these illustrations have been purposefully manipulated or supplied with deliberately deceptive descriptions to challenge those persons who believe everything they see, to think again. In this era of Facebook fakes, misinformation, and disinformation, unless we remain ever vigilant, it can happen here!
