  Until the implementation of new legislation on March 26, 2015, men were given preference to women in the British royal line. This system of male primogeniture meant that women seldom inherited the throne, and even when they did, they were often dominated by male councillors. Those women who married British kings gained the title of Queen, but they were queen consorts, holding the title with no power. This meant only a select few women ruled in their own right.  
  	When Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952, many commentators heralded the beginning of her reign as the second Elizabethan age. The first one, of course, concerned the reign of Henry VIII’s second surviving daughter and middle surviving child, Queen Elizabeth I, one of England’s most famous and influential rulers. It was an age when the arts, commerce and trade flourished. It was the epoch of gallantry and great, enduring literature. It was also an age of wars and military conflicts in which men were the primary drivers and women often were pawns.  
  	Elizabeth I changed the rules of the game and indeed she herself was changed by the game. She was a female monarch of England, a kingdom that had unceremoniously broken with the Catholic Church, and the Vatican and the rest of Christendom was baying for her blood. She had had commercial and militaristic enemies galore. In the end, she helped change the entire structure of female leadership.  
  	Queen Elizabeth II has become so much a part of British society and culture that her presence is taken almost for granted, setting the standard people now expect of a British monarch. The longest lived and second longest reigning monarch in British history, Elizabeth II has overseen her country during a time of incredible turmoil and ever-accelerating change, providing a stable figure at the heart of a nation going through seemingly endless upheavals.

  Before the Vietnam War, most Americans would have been hard pressed to locate Vietnam on a map. South Vietnamese President Diệm’s regime was extremely unpopular, and war broke out between Communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam around the end of the 1950s. Kennedy’s administration tried to prop up the South Vietnamese with training and assistance, but the South Vietnamese military was feeble. A month before his death, Kennedy signed a presidential directive withdrawing 1,000 American personnel, but shortly after Kennedy’s assassination, new President Lyndon B. Johnson reversed course, instead opting to expand American assistance to South Vietnam. 
  In 1965, the government decided to divert many air assets to supporting a bigger American ground presence in South Vietnam. Admiral U.S.G. Sharp noted, “Our Rolling Thunder bombing program against North Vietnam got off to a painfully slow start and inched along in the most gradual increase in intensity." 
  The fighting in the la Drang Valley represented the first significant encounters between American soldiers and the North Vietnamese. Fought in November 1965 as a part of the Pleiku campaign in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, these battles were most notable at the time for involving large-scale helicopter assaults supported by B-52 strategic bombers playing tactical support roles. They also established a model for the war in Vietnam in which the Americans made use of rapid air mobility, reliance on artillery, and close air support, while the North Vietnamese attempted to engage their enemy at close range with the objective of neutralizing their firepower. But it would also serve as a harbinger of what was to come, as tactical successes would not bring about strategic advantages for the Americans. In fact, both sides would claim victory by the time fighting was done around Ia Drang.

  In their second edition, Carl and Looman discuss the significant world events, such as the COVID epidemic, that impacted the American society in the past decade, which lead to an overall twenty percent reduction in prison populations across the board. The second edition includes a new chapter covering the history of prisons that clearly establishes the fact that prisons have always been about making money and less about rehabilitating offenders. They also introduce the new era of decarceration and desistance, encouraging courts to defer sentences and keep minor offenders at home with their families and in their communities while they work, attend education classes, and receive mental health treatment. Once again Carl and Looman end their book with a rational and daring proposal—Marshall Plan 2024—that envisions a way to bring the criminal justice system into the twenty-first century focusing on social equity and humane compassion for those who want to emigrate out.
