If you have no core of "authenticity," no experience of your so-called homeland, how do you piece together an Asian American identity out of Westerners' ideas about Asians? Your sense of yourself is part stereotype, part aspiration, part guilt. In this dazzling collection, one sequence deconstructs the sounds and letters of the word "deracinations" to create a sonic landscape of micro- and macroaggressions, assimilation, and self-doubt. A kaleidoscopic personal essay explores the racial positioning of Asian Americans and the epidemic of anti-Asian hate. Several poems titled "Study of Two Figures" anatomize and dissect the Asian other: Midas the striving, nouveau-riche father; Dr. Seuss and the imaginary daughter Chrysanthemum-Pearl he invented while authoring his anti-Japanese propaganda campaign; Pasiphaë, mother of the minotaur, and Sado, the eighteenth-century Korean prince, both condemned to containers allegorical and actual.

  Two of the most influential and early feminist plays to have ever graced the stage, we have have Miss Julie and The Stronger. 
  Miss Julie is a one act tragedy that finds itself in a similar vein as Henrik Ibsen's "Hedda Gabbler" and "A Doll's House," in which the main woman of the play (Miss Julie) tries to take hold of her own destiny and break away from the system that has failed to meet her needs, but is unable (or unwilling) to see the consequences of her own actions--a desperate cry for legitimacy to a society that seems indifferent to her struggle. 
  The Stronger, in comparison, is a ten minute play about the fallout of such a decision, and confronting that catalyst many years later--a contemplation on the manipulation of thought (both of the main character and the object of her insecurities) and the forgetfulness of coping.

  I think of prayer as a clay urn we lower hand over hand into the well of our hearts, the well that opens to the unlimited water table of blessings. 
  There are different reasons we go the well. There are dark times when we face doubt and loss. There are times when the fire of inspiration lifts our minds and hearts to a new possibility. And there are times when we celebrate the feeling of being at one with all around us. 
  The Prayer Beads is divided into three sections: Poems for the Dark Night; Poems for Renewal; and Poems for the Harvest. 
  I encourage you to linger on each poem as if it were a prayer bead, to linger on each poem until you feel it in your fingertips.
