  When it comes to writing we have our favourite authors.  But what of the authors themselves. What are they keen to write of? 
  For our classic authors; from Poe to Lovecraft, from Woolf to Fitzgerald art in their words, is something to be admired.  From many angles, many views, their stories, their characters interact with art and the consequences fall as they may.

  I was never my mom's favorite child. It was always her and my sister.  
  When I was old enough to be on my own, I left without looking back. I made my own way in the world, had a family and built a beautiful life. But a trip to the emergency room in 2013 changed everything. My mom had dementia, and I was tasked with taking care of her, all by myself.  
  I learned everything I could about grief in an effort to prepare for her to die. I had to face my own resentments, fears, and anger as I accepted my caregiver role so I could love my mom while she was alive and dying.  
  Even at the end, when I was just a nice lady to came to visit her, I was ready, no matter how many years she had left. I knew I'd be by her side and hold her hand as she left this earth. But nothing I did prepared me for what actually happened.  
  All my best-laid plans crumbled around me as I had to use everything I'd learned to make it through the worst thing I could never have imagined.  
  When the Window Closes is a profoundly personal and emotional narrative centered around the author's six-year journey as a caregiver for her mother, who had Alzheimer's disease. The book weaves back and forth between past events and the present caregiving moments, illustrating her complicated and trying relationship with her mother and how the burden of caregiving evolved into a great gift of unconditional love and acceptance. 
  Throughout the memoir, the author explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationships, family responsibilities, caregiving in the face of adversity, navigating the confusing healthcare system, and grappling with feelings of grief, loss, fear, resentment, and finding peace in letting go.

It’s a tale of a life filled with adventure and travel like Roald Dahl’s “Going Solo” but without a war. It reflects Louise Hay’s “You Can Heal Your Life”, where pain and discomfort keep coming until the lesson is learned, but without affirmations. 
  In Search of Marvellousness is the inner story of Marcus Lovett, the boy from Bendigo who just wanted to travel the world and have a good time. From being Australia’s first freestyle skier in the 1988 Olympics Winter Games at Calgary to being an Acapulco cliff diver and stuntman, risking life and limb for glory and a few dollars. The physical pain of breaks and dislocations screamed lessons sometimes lost in translation but continued until they were understood. 
  In Search of Marvellousness covers the mental and emotional self-doubts of imposter syndrome. Marcus produces and hosts the long-running television show called Snowshow. Filmed worldwide and broadcast globally, the Snowshow was a skiing and snowboarding travel show. Though he was earning money doing what he loved, he still felt like a ski bum looking for his next free ride. 
  In Search of Marvellousness explores the connection between physical, mental, emotional and spiritual discomfort. Marcus explores the joy of fear and discovers self-esteem is the answer, constantly reminding himself to keep the spirit.

  As a multiracial household in Chicago’s North Side community of Rogers Park, race is at the core of Francesca T. Royster and her family's world, influencing everyday acts of parenting and the conception of what family truly means. Like Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts, this lyrical and affecting memoir focuses on a unit of three: the author; her wife Annie, who's white; and Cecilia, the Black daughter they adopt as a couple in their forties and fifties. Choosing Family chronicles this journey to motherhood while examining the messiness and complexity of adoption and parenthood from a Black, queer, and feminist perspective. Royster also explores her memories of the matriarchs of her childhood and the homes these women created in Chicago’s South Side—itself a dynamic character in the memoir—where “family” was fluid, inclusive, and not necessarily defined by marriage or other socially recognized contracts. 
      
  Calling upon the work of some of her favorite queer thinkers, including José Esteban Muñoz and Audre Lorde, Royster interweaves her experiences and memories with queer and gender theory to argue that many Black families, certainly her own, have historically had a “queer” attitude toward family: configurations that sit outside the white normative experience and are the richer for their flexibility and generosity of spirit.
