Beschreibung

A Yankee in Canada: Illustrated and Annotated Edition by Henry David Thoreau.

Henry Thoreau traveled to Canada from September 25 to October 2, 1850. His account was first published serially in 1853, in Putnam's Monthly, as "An Excursion to Canada", then in book form in 1866, in A Yankee in Canada, with Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers.

In the summer of 1846, tax collector Samuel Staples arrested Thoreau for his refusal to pay the poll tax, interrupting Thoreau’s tranquil residence at Walden Pond for a day. Thoreau had not paid the tax for several years, as a form of protest against slavery and the government’s recent declaration of war against Mexico.

The townspeople were so curious about Thoreau’s refusal that he felt compelled to explain his actions in a public lecture in January 1848. It is here collected for the first time in book form under its now-famous title, “Civil Disobedience.”

As a proud Black gay minister, Benjamin Carlton gives you a firsthand account of the difficult lived experiences of the intersections of race, faith, and sexual orientation in America. In 2015, cutting against the grain of an entire culture, knowing all that he might lose, Benjamin made the brave decision to come out as a gay minister on TheRoot.com. Sparking national debate, Benjamin’s story resonated with millions who struggle to accept who they are because of society’s prejudices. For years he prayed earnestly in hopes of God “delivering” him from homosexuality, not realizing that his being gay was all a part of God’s perfect design.
This spellbinding book shatters the myth of the petty, vengeful, fault-finding God and reveals a God who is loving, compassionate, and wants you to win. Through riveting stories of triumph and defeat, Benjamin uses his wit and unfailing humor to take you on his journey of resurrecting unconditional love. The book is written to help those who are struggling to accept themselves or struggling to accept those who are different from them. Benjamin intends to empower that precious soul that is looking for a path forward that speaks to their identity

“First-rate entertainment”: The author of the Corfu Trilogy recounts his expedition to Madagascar and search for the elusive, endangered aye-aye (Publishers Weekly). In 1990, Gerald Durrell; his wife, Lee; and a television crew embarked on a rescue mission to one of the most interesting places in the world: the island of Madagascar. It was there that they hoped to record and capture the endangered aye-aye, the world’s largest nocturnal primate.   Recognizable by its big eyes and long fingers, the strange, rare aye-aye was an animal of incredible fascination for Durrell, one he felt compelled to conserve as its habitat was taken away by deforestation.   In this passionate memoir, Durrell’s funny, vibrant voice shines as he describes the magical landscape of Madagascar, the exotic animals that inhabit it, and the challenges of his expedition to preserve an important part of our ever-changing world.  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Gerald Durrell including rare photos from the author’s estate.
