Synopsis

In "Democracy, an American Novel," Henry Adams masterfully explores the intricate dynamics of American politics and the complexities of social change during the late 19th century. Through a captivating narrative that intertwines fiction with incisive political analysis, Adams critiques the moral fabric of a democracy teetering on the edge of corruption and disillusionment. The literary style is characterized by sharp wit and an engaging prose that invites readers to navigate the treacherous waters of political ambition and moral ambiguity, reflecting the prevailing societal tensions of the Gilded Age. Henry Adams, a member of the distinguished Adams family and a prominent historian, draws upon his extensive background in politics and history to inform this novel. His firsthand experiences in the political milieu of Washington D.C. and his awareness of the limitations of idealism in the face of pragmatic governance form the bedrock of this work. Adams's unique position allows him to articulate the dissection of political ideals and reality, contributing to the emerging discourse on democracy's failures and potentials. "Democracy, an American Novel" is a significant read for anyone interested in understanding the historical and philosophical underpinnings of American democracy. Its profound insights into the nature of power and morality render it timeless, making it as relevant in contemporary discussions of democracy as it was upon its release. This novel is essential for scholars, students, and general readers alike who seek to delve into the paradoxes of governance and civic responsibility.

If I asked you how many Robin Hoods you could name, what would the list be like?

I’m sure you’d reel off a whole host of famous actors, like Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks, Kevin Costner, Michael Praed, Sean Connery, and John Cleese, to name but six. All of these men have played the role of Robin Hood in various television and movie adaptations of the famous story.

But that’s not what I meant.

I’m talking about Robin Hood himself; the ever popular and ever noble outlaw hero who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, with his trusty bow and arrow as his weapon of choice. The leader of a band of like-minded outlaws, christened the Merry Men (‘merry’ – in this instance – derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘illustrious, famous, great, mighty’, etc. In the same sense, Hood means ‘hoodlum, thief, thug, criminal’). Robin Hood was a champion for justice, fighting against the oppression of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and his right-hand man Guy of Gisbourne, all under the watchful eye of the wicked Prince John (who had been placed on the throne as a substitute monarch whilst his brother, King Richard The Lionheart, fought in the Crusades).

Of course, that was only one Robin Hood. Very much like the various incarnations that have appeared in classic novels, Hollywood movies, television series, radio serials and theatrical plays, Robin Hood was more than one man.

Coming across the term "art monster" in Jenny Offill's 2014 novel Dept. of Speculation, Lauren Elkin was intrigued. What kinds of connections might there be between art and monstrosity, and how was it different when the artist in question was a woman?

Art Monsters is a landmark feminist intervention in the way we think about women's stories and bodies, calling attention to a radical genealogy of feminist art that not only reacts against patriarchy but redefines its own aesthetic aims. Exploring a rich lineage of visual artists, thinkers, and writers, Elkin examines the ways feminists have confronted the problem of how to tell the truth of their experiences as bodies. Queer bodies, sick bodies, raced bodies, female bodies: What are the languages of the body, and what are the materials we need to transcribe them? Above all, how can we use the notion of the feminist "art monster" to shape how we live our lives?

Writing in the tradition of Susan Sontag and Maggie Nelson, Elkin demonstrates her power as a cultural critic in this erudite and engaging book. From Kara Walker's silhouettes to Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's trilingual masterpiece Dictee, Art Monsters daringly weaves links between disparate artists and writers, and shows that their work offers a potent defense of beauty and excess, sentiment and touch, ambiguity and opacity.

This study of sexuality in seventeenth-century Latin America takes the listener beneath the surface of daily life in a colonial city. Cartagena was an important Spanish port and the site of an Inquisition high court, a slave market, a leper colony, a military base, and a prison colony—colonial institutions that imposed order by enforcing Catholicism, cultural and religious boundaries, and prevailing race and gender hierarchies. The city was also simmering with illegal activity, from contraband trade to prostitution to heretical religious practices. Nicole von Germeten's research uncovers scandalous stories drawn from archival research in Inquisition cases, criminal records, wills, and other legal documents. The stories focus largely on sexual agency and honor: an insult directed at a married woman causes a deadly street battle; a young doña uses sex to manipulate a lustful, corrupt inquisitor. Scandals like these illustrate the central thesis of this book: women in colonial Cartagena de Indias took control of their own sex lives and used sex and rhetoric connected to sexuality to plead their cases when they had to negotiate with colonial bureaucrats.
