Beschreibung

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891), née Hahn Von Rottenstern, often known as Madame Blavatsky, was a Russian mystic and author who co-founded the Theosophical Society in 1875. She gained an international following as the primary founder of Theosophy as a belief system.Blavatsky was a controversial figure during her lifetime, championed by supporters as an enlightened sage and derided as a charlatan by critics. Her Theosophical doctrines influenced the spread of Hindu and Buddhist ideas in the West as well as the development of Western esoteric currents like Ariosophy, Anthroposophy, and the New Age Movement. She wrote fundamental essays, including Isis Unveiled, The Secret Doctrine, The Key to Theosophy and The Voice of the Silence. The Blavatsky’s article Psychic and Noetic Action, which we propose to our readers today, was published in October-November 1880 in the Lucifer Magazine.According to Blavatsky, holding to our motto, “There is no religion higher than truth”, we refuse most decidedly to pander to physical science. Yet, we may say this: If the so-called exact sciences limited their activity only to the physical realm of nature: if they concerned themselves strictly with surgery, chemistry—up to its legitimate boundaries, and with physiology—so far as the latter relates to the structure of our corporeal frame, then the Occultists would be the first to seek help in modern sciences, however many their blunders and mistakes. But once that over-stepping material Nature the physiologists of “animalistic” school pretend to meddle with, and deliver ex cathedra dicta on, the higher functions and phenomena of the mind, saying that a careful analysis brings them to a firm conviction that no more than the animal is man a free-agent, far less a responsible one—then the Occultist has a far greater right than the average modern “Idealist” to protest.

The modern world, with its emphasis on speed and busyness and the mis-named "social" media, has not been an especially welcoming place to develop long-lasting, solid friendships that help to nurture the heart. Providing exemplars and guidance in this challenging situation, this book on friendship looks at some of the details of the friendships of the eighteenth-century pastor-theologian Andrew Fuller to help us think about and engage in meaningful relationships that provide joy and comfort (in the older sense of that term as "strength") for the Christian journey. This is an ideal study for anyone desirous of being a better friend, as well as for those interested in knowing something of the history of Christian friendship.

Paul's second letter to the Corinthians explores the meaning of the cross in terms of personal suffering--his own, and that of all the Messiah's people. If in Galatians he is angry, if in Philippians he is joyful, in this letter his deep sorrow and the raw wounds of his own recent suffering are very apparent. Yet he is determined to view all of his suffering and all of the troubles of the world through the lens of the gospel. These studies by Tom Wright on this powerful epistle point us toward the strange comfort to be found in the suffering, death and resurrection-life of Jesus, the Lord of the world.

Why would God ask one of his prophets to marry a prostitute? Because he wanted to teach Hosea, the nation of Israel, and all of us today a lesson we will not forget, a lesson that is painful yet joyous.
Hosea's somber portrait of the human condition is our lesson in pain. All of us have been unfaithful, forsaking God and his ways. Yet Hosea's clear illustration of God's love for us brings joy. While we are yet sinners, God comes to us and loves us.
Derek Kidner imaginatively takes us through the unfolding story of Hosea and his wife, Gomer, explaining the basic message, pointing out its subtleties, and encouraging us to live lives worthy of the God who loves the loveless.
Part of the beloved Bible Speaks Today series, The Message of Hosea offers an insightful, readable exposition of the biblical text and thought-provoking discussion of how its meaning relates to contemporary life. Used by students and teachers around the world, the Bible Speaks Today commentaries are ideal for those studying or preaching the Bible and anyone who wants to delve deeper into the text. This revised edition of a classic volume features lightly updated language and a new interior design.

A Concise Guide to Finding Jesus in the Old Testament

Can we see Jesus in the first 39 books of Scripture? While Christians believe the entire Bible points to Jesus as the Messiah, many have trouble identifying him in the Old Testament because he's never mentioned by name.

In this addition to the Church Questions series, David King guides curious readers on a journey to discover Jesus in all of Scripture. The booklet begins by examining Jesus's own understanding of how the Old Testament witnesses to him. Next, readers learn 6 ways the Old Testament points to Jesus, including promises of redemption, how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament law and wisdom, and Old Testament types of Jesus's life, death, and resurrection. Finally, King explains why it matters to believers and the church today that Jesus is understood as the fulfillment of the Old Testament.

    - Biblical and Theological: Explains the various ways in which Jesus fulfills the Old Testament
    - Accessible: Answers common questions about the Old Testament in a short, easy-to-read format
    - Part of the 9Marks Church Questions Series: Other titles include What Should I Look For in a Church?; How Can I Be Sure I'm Saved?; and Is God Really Sovereign?
