‘A funny, irreverent and loving book’ Daily Express
‘We had such a variety of experts visiting our home, we really needed a revolving door. All these professionals would watch our son playing while shaking their heads and making tutting sounds, like builders considering a bad job you wanted them to fix. “Tut tut tut. No speech, disordered social skills, sensory issues. This is going to cost you!!”’
Ashley Blaker has six children, three of whom have an SEN diagnosis. Between endless meetings, countless therapists, public humiliations, failed playdates, surreal monologues and occasional violence, it’s certainly not what anyone would call a ‘normal’ household – but would he want it any other way?
Normal Schmormal is part-memoir, part how-to guide, highlighting the many challenges, as well as the hugely rewarding elements, of parenting children with additional needs. Written with humour, compassion and a lot of love, it’s a must-read for parents, carers and teachers of children with SEN, either looking for a bit of support or in need of a very big laugh.

Douglas Green considers his late pound puppy—a knuckleheaded dog named Shirelle—to be the greatest teacher he's ever known. "If Shirelle were in a fancy restaurant," he writes, "she might climb onto someone's table and eat their food, but she would never, ever, insult the waiter." The Teachings of Shirelle is the hilarious and uplifting story of how this unique pooch taught her guardian to live life to the fullest. This touching ode to the human-animal connection offers a lighthearted, philosophical, psychological, and spiritual bounty of lessons gleaned from the simple-minded brilliance of an unforgettable teacher. These lessons are as relevant and valuable as ever, showing readers how to look at the world through eyes that are not their own. Eyes that, in this case, belong to a dog.

The Sea All Around - A passion...

I'm not the only one with islomania – lots of people have the same affliction, for which there is no known cure, thank goodness. I have a similar affinity for boats and I think the similarity is that they are both tiny worlds, bounded by water.
Richard Clubley makes no secret of his love of Scottish islands. In fact, it's his mission to spread the love through writing about all the islands he has visited. The Sea All Around is a very personal appreciation of these places – 'remote' to some, but the centre of the world for those who live there.
Richard gets to the heart of island life, picking up on the particular character of each island he visits by making friends and learning about local history and lore, such as the story of the exploding float on Lunga, the ingenious defence of the garrison at Cairn-na-Burgh on the Treshnish Isles and the Battle of Bloody Bay on Mull.
I still love a blank sheet of paper and the first sentence of a new island story.
