Beschreibung

Famous for his pseudonym ‘Sapper’, H. C. McNeile drew on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War for his war stories and novels. His most famous creation is Bulldog Drummond, an ex-British Army Captain turned crime-fighting gentleman vigilante. McNeile’s stories are either directly about the war or feature characters whose lives have been shaped by the conflict. In later years, his work shifted into the genre of thrillers, featuring upper class Englishmen defending England from foreigners plotting against it. This eBook presents McNeile’s collected works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

Once upon a time there was a blacksmith named Jack Oldfield. He was regarded as particularly miserly and addicted to drink. On All Hallows' Eve, the Devil himself appeared to him in a tavern and wanted to claim his soul. But Jack negotiated for one final drink. Since the Devil had no money with him, he transformed himself into a coin to pay for the drink. Jack quickly pocketed this coin in his purse, which contained a small silver cross, so the Devil could not transform back. Thereupon the Devil promised to leave him in peace for several more years. When the Devil came ten years later to claim Jack's soul again, Jack arranged with the Devil to have one last apple as a final meal from the apple tree. The Devil climbed the tree and Jack thereupon carved a cross into the trunk as quickly as he could. The Devil could thus no longer climb down from the tree and was trapped. Therefore the Devil promised to leave Jack's soul in peace for all eternity. When Jack died of natural causes decades later, he was turned away from Heaven's gate. But when he knocked at the Devil's door, the Devil likewise sent him away because he had made him a promise. However, the Devil did give him a piece of hellfire, and so Jack has wandered ever since in the gloomy in-between world with the hellfire, which he placed in a turnip he had brought with him...

Learn the secret – or die trying
Has ex-SAS soldier Ben Hope finally got out of his depth?
That’s the question Ben faces when the hunt for a missing girl takes him to China. He’s a stranger in a strange land – but he’s also the victim’s only hope. To make things worse, she’s almost family.
As the pressure mounts, so does the gruesome death toll. With ruthless enemies in pursuit and an unlikely alliance with an enigmatic detective his only lifeline, Ben realises that this situation is far more explosive than even he’d bargained for. Suddenly it’s no longer just the missing girl’s fate depending on him.
At the heart of the mystery lies an ancient secret dating back to China’s first emperor and the legendary Terracotta Army – a secret that people will still kill for, millennia later. Ben Hope has never turned his back on those in need, and he’s no stranger to tough odds. But can he survive long enough to discover the truth – and is he ready for the consequences?
In this top, best-selling novel of the action series, ex-SAS soldier Ben Hope, now a private investigator, finds himself in the heart of an espionage adventure. The suspense of the story is as explosive as the war he once fought in, making this sequel a Sunday Times bestselling book.
