Synopsis

In "A Middy in Command: A Tale of the Slave Squadron," Harry Collingwood crafts an exhilarating maritime adventure that plunges readers into the tumultuous world of the Royal Navy during the 19th century. Set against the backdrop of the slave trade, the narrative follows the audacious exploits of a young midshipman who rises to command as he engages in the perilous pursuit of slave ships on the open seas. Collingwood's vivid descriptions and swashbuckling style evoke the essence of nautical literature, reflecting his own deep understanding of naval history and the moral imperatives surrounding the abolitionist movement of his time. Harry Collingwood, born in 1851, was not only a prolific author but also a seaman, which informed his authentic portrayal of naval life. His experiences aboard various vessels imbued his works with a unique realism, as he fervently explored themes of bravery, adventure, and the ethical dilemmas of a society grappling with its past. Drawing inspiration from his contemporary maritime milieu and socio-political context, Collingwood's writing serves both as entertainment and as an inquiry into the human condition amidst moral crises. This thrilling novel will captivate readers with its blend of action, historical relevance, and moral complexity. For those who appreciate tales of adventure and the exploration of ethical themes within historical settings, "A Middy in Command" is an essential addition to any literary collection, offering a profound yet thrilling insight into a pivotal period in maritime history.

William Benet Sterling and his best friend Jacob (Jake) Brown, two Kansas farm boys, realize their dream of riding with the famed seventh cavalry joining the unit at Fort Abraham Lincoln. The two teenagers gallop headlong into battle with Major Reno and A company as they mount a breath-taking charge against the Sioux and Cheyenne village along the river. They live the terror of being forced back into a small grove of cottonwood trees helplessly watching wounded friends being butchered and brutalized. As the fighting builds to an impossible pitch, it becomes clear that the only way out of this killing box is to charge into the enemy and race for better cover. Three companies of cavalry blast out of flimsy cover and into the open valley. The Indians realize the advantage and turn the breakout into a buffalo chase. Troopers endure a running gun battle through the valley, across the Little Bighorn River, and up a coulee to a flat, but defensible portion of the rolling bluffs.
Over the next 36 hours the boys fight for their lives, and the lives of those around them as Indians occupy the heights. Death stalks every second they stay on that hill. When it becomes clear men are going to start dying of thirst they volunteer to be part of a water party that must sneak back down the coulee, dart across 300 yards of open ground that is defended by the enemy, fill canteens, and make it back up hill safely.
This book took two years to research and write in order to provide the most accurate account of all the battles in the Little Bighorn Valley. Aside from the two main characters every player in the story is accurate, including names, backgrounds, wounds, and participation in the battle. All operations in that battle have been included and written in detail.

Perfect for fans of Jane Austen, Janice Hadlow, Gill Hornby, and anyone with a Bridgerton-shaped hole in their lives.
‘Angelica had always known her lack of high birth, fortune or influence debarred her from being presented as an eligible young woman worthy of marriage. To cap it all, being an actress assured she was utterly beyond the pale of respectability.'
Nightly at the Covent Garden Theatre in London, an enchanting actress is wowing the crowds with her affecting portrayal of Ophelia. Preyed on by rakes and opportunistic young bucks, feted by dukes and earls, even the Prince Regent himself, Angelica Leigh is a sensation.
But in Regency England, beauty and talent are not enough to be considered marriage material, so when the eminently eligible Lord Charles Latimer sets his heart on Angelica, his uncle is sent to intervene.
As a highly respected, hard-working and wealthy lawmaker, The Honourable Ivor Asprey, is himself seen as desirable husband material, but widowed with an eleven-year-old daughter Elinor, he has forsaken all thoughts of romance. Lord Latimer’s mother, the Duchess of Arlington, despairs of her son, despite being reassured by Ivor that his infatuation with the actress will pass. But there is something about Angelica Leigh that demands attention, and even the austere and upstanding Mr Asprey isn’t immune to her charms.
Sunday Times bestselling author Jane Dunn brings the Regency period irresistibly to life.
    Praise for Jane Dunn:
'Brilliant, sparkling and very clever.' Elizabeth Buchan
'Jane Dunn’s THE MARRIAGE SEASON gives all the immersive pleasure of Georgette Heyer’s brilliantly confected Regency novels, in a sublime alternative world of joy. Bridgerton look out!' Melanie Reid, The Times
‘Outstanding, perceptive and delightfully readable.’ Sunday Times Books of the Year ‘Jane Dunn has written a splendid piece of popular history with the ready-pen of a highly skilled writer, endowed with remarkable insight.’ Roy Strong, Daily Mail
‘Jane Dunn is one of our best biographers.’ Miranda Seymour, Sunday Times
    Readers love Jane Dunn:
‘All the characters were so alive, I wasn’t ready for the book to end and longed to know more of what happens to them…** This is the Regency era come to vivid, believable, exciting life.** I can’t wait for the next book from this author.’
‘I can not rate this book high enough! As a lover as Georgette Heyer I've always looked for books that give as much historical detail as hers and I'm often disappointed, but not with this book! The characters are spirited and loveable and I can honestly say I didn't want to put it down.’
‘Without a shadow of doubt, this is the best novel I have read in ages. Regency addicts won't find many heaving bosoms or tumbling ringlets. What they will find is an ingeniously plotted story with the emphasis on the men, with all their wit and cynicisms. This is underpinned by strong women whose story it really is, who cleverly manage these men with perfection... I am recommending this book to everyone, and have bought two more as gifts.’
‘Jane has Dunn it again, reassuring us that this is how life really was – for the fortunate – when the boys came home from the Napoleonic wars, and making us feel at home then, nonetheless. Eat your heart out, Bridgerton!’
‘A beautifully written story full of twists and turns that transports you straight into Regency England.’
