The cosmos, a vast and mysterious expanse, has captivated the human imagination for centuries. From ancient civilizations gazing at the stars to modern scientists peering through telescopes, the desire to understand the universe and our place within it has been a constant driving force in our pursuit of knowledge. In this chapter, we begin our journey into the cosmos, exploring its origin, structure, and the fundamental forces that shape it.
The origin of the universe is a topic that has intrigued scientists and philosophers alike. According to the widely accepted Big Bang theory, the universe began as an incredibly dense and hot point around 13.8 billion years ago. This singularity rapidly expanded, and over time, matter cooled, forming the stars, galaxies, and other cosmic structures we observe today. The formation of the universe marks the beginning of everything we know—space, time, and energy. As the universe continues to expand, we are left with the challenge of understanding its past and predicting its future.
Gravity is one of the most important forces in the cosmos. It governs the motion of celestial bodies, from the smallest particles to the largest galaxies. Gravity pulls objects together, and it is responsible for the formation of stars, planets, and galaxies. The force of gravity also plays a crucial role in shaping the universe on a cosmic scale, influencing the way matter is distributed and the way galaxies cluster together. Without gravity, the universe as we know it would not exist. It is the force that holds everything together, from the Earth we live on to the farthest reaches of space.

In the beginning was the Big Bang: an unimaginably hot fire almost fourteen billion years ago in which the first elements were forged. The physical theory of the hot nascent universe—the Big Bang—was one of the most consequential developments in twentieth-century science. And yet it leaves many questions unanswered: Why is the universe so big? Why is it so old? What is the origin of structure in the cosmos? In An Infinity of Worlds, physicist Will Kinney explains a more recent theory that may hold the answers to these questions and even explain the ultimate origins of the universe: cosmic inflation, before the primordial fire of the Big Bang.

Kinney argues that cosmic inflation is a transformational idea in cosmology, changing our picture of the basic structure of the cosmos and raising unavoidable questions about what we mean by a scientific theory. He explains that inflation is a remarkable unification of inner space and outer space, in which the physics of the very large (the cosmos) meets the physics of the very small (elementary particles and fields), closing in a full circle at the first moment of time.

Kinney considers the consequences of eternal cosmic inflation. Can we come to terms with the possibility that our entire observable universe is one of infinitely many, forever hidden from our view?

Our universe is a vast, mysterious expanse filled with wonders that have captivated humanity for centuries. Yet, despite all our technological advancements and discoveries, what we see—stars, planets, galaxies—is only a tiny fraction of what actually exists. Most of the cosmos is shrouded in a veil of mystery, composed of substances we cannot see or touch. These elusive components are known as dark matter and dark energy, and they make up about 95 percent of the total content of the universe. We are surrounded by a cosmic shadow—an invisible structure that shapes reality as we know it.
The idea that there might be more to the universe than meets the eye first emerged from observations that didn’t quite add up. In the early 20th century, astronomers began noticing that galaxies didn’t behave the way Newtonian physics predicted. Stars on the outskirts of galaxies were moving much faster than they should have been, given the visible matter present. The gravitational pull from the observable stars and gas simply wasn’t enough to hold galaxies together at those speeds. Something unseen had to be adding mass, providing the extra gravity needed to explain the motion. Thus, the concept of dark matter began to take shape—not as a proven substance, but as a placeholder for a profound mystery.
Around the same time, cosmologists studying the large-scale structure of the universe found another surprise. When measuring how galaxies moved relative to one another, it became clear that some unseen force was pushing space apart, causing the universe to expand at an accelerating rate. This discovery, first confirmed through the study of distant supernovae, was not just unexpected—it was revolutionary. To account for this repulsive force, scientists introduced the idea of dark energy, an unknown form of energy permeating space and counteracting gravity on the largest scales.
