Synopsis

History of Schools explores the development of formal education systems from ancient times to the present day, revealing how schools have become fundamental to modern societies. This textbook examines the changing purposes of education, the evolving roles of teachers and students, and the impact of social and political movements on what and how we learn.

Did you know that education was once primarily for privileged elites? Or that schools are not just places of instruction but also reflections of societal values? The book takes a chronological approach, starting with ancient academies and monastic schools and moving through the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the modern era.

Each chapter analyzes educational philosophies, curricula, and the social context of schools, highlighting key figures like Plato and Rousseau. By using diverse sources, including historical documents and student diaries, the book provides a rich understanding of education's evolution and its links to broader societal trends.

The book concludes by addressing contemporary issues like globalization and equity, offering historical perspectives on today's educational challenges.

One woman's enlightening trek through the natural histories, cultural stories, and present perils of thirteen national monuments

Starting amid the sagebrush of Bears Ears National Monument on the eve of the Trump Administration's decision to reduce the site by eighty-five percent, McKenzie Long climbs sandstone cliffs, is awed by Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings, and is intrigued by 4,000-year-old petroglyphs. She hikes through remote pink canyons recently removed from the boundary of Grand Staircase–Escalante, skis to a backcountry hut in Maine to view a truly dark night sky, snorkels in warm Hawaiian waters to plumb the meaning of marine preserves, volunteers near the most contaminated nuclear site in the US, and witnesses firsthand the diverse forms of devotion evoked by the Rio Grande. In essays both contemplative and resonant, this book confronts an unjust past and imagines a collaborative future that bears witness to these regions' enduring Indigenous connections.

From climate change realities to volatile tensions between economic development and environmental conservation, practical and philosophical issues arise as Long seeks the complicated and often overlooked stories of these incomparable places. Her journey emphasizes in clear and urgent terms the unique significance of, and grave threats to, these contested lands.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Many doctors in Germany were convinced that they were the chosen people to create a healthy, racially pure Volkskörper (body of people) and by doing so, establish a racial utopia. As strong supporters of National Socialism, they welcomed the founding of the Third Reich. After Hitler acceded to power, German physicians joined the SS in particular. During the twelve years of the Nazi era, seven percent of German doctors became members of the SS. The average membership of the population was only 0.6 percent. Moreover, doctors were also overrepresented as a profession, with teachers consisting of less than half a percent and musicians only three percent. Only lawyers had a larger share in the SS than doctors.
The average income of German doctors increased extremely after 1933, even exceeding the income of lawyers. The Nazi doctors of the human experiments also joined the SS in large numbers. German doctors were far more reluctant to join the NSDAP than the SS. Before 1933, only seven percent of all German doctors joined the NSDAP (Nazi party). They joined the party when it seemed opportune to do so, in 1933, and particularly in 1937. In 1933, physicians made up almost a quarter of all academic professionals in the NSDAP. Most doctors joined the NSDAP in 1937, with a membership rate of 43 percent of the total profession. German physicians sat on the fence during the first years of the Nazi era, insecure about the effects of the new regime on their profession. By 1937, the Third Reich had won the trust of several reasons. The NSDAP had solved the economic crisis and had reorganized the medical profession. Moreover, the regime had solved “the Jewish question” in the medical sector.

In a world of war, terrorism, and other geopolitical threats to global stability, how should committed Christians honor Jesus Christ and his Word? How should Christians think and act when it comes to church-state relations, the preservation of order, the practice of just peacemaking, and the use of coercive force?
In this volume in IVP Academic's Spectrum series, four contributors—experts in Christian ethics, political philosophy, and international affairs—offer the best of current Christian thinking on issues of war and peace. They present four distinct views:

    - Eric Patterson, just war view
    - Myles Werntz, nonviolence view
    - A. J. Nolte, Christian realist view
    - Meic Pearse, church historical view
Each contributor makes a case for his own view and responds to the others, highlighting complexities and real-world implications of the various perspectives. Edited and with an introduction and conclusion by the philosopher Paul Copan, this book provides a helpful orientation to the key positions today.
Spectrum Multiview Books offer a range of viewpoints on contested topics within Christianity, giving contributors the opportunity to present their position and also respond to others in this dynamic publishing format.
