Sinopsis

"Education for Women" explores the historical struggle for women's access to formal education, revealing the societal barriers and patriarchal structures that long denied them equal opportunities. It examines how philosophical and religious justifications were employed to limit women's learning, with a deep dive into the gradual shifts during the Enlightenment and beyond. Highlighting both the historical denial of education and the emergence of pioneering female educators, the book emphasizes the ongoing challenges in contemporary education. The book uniquely combines historical analysis with contemporary insights, offering a nuanced understanding of the ongoing struggle for gender equality. Primary sources like letters and educational records offer firsthand accounts, while statistical data demonstrates trends and disparities. Though significant progress has occurred, the book argues that true gender equality remains an unfulfilled goal.

Structured logically, "Education for Women" begins by establishing a historical backdrop and defining key concepts. Subsequent chapters explore the denial of education in different periods and regions, dedicating a section to women who defied norms. The book culminates with an analysis of contemporary challenges, such as gender bias in STEM fields, and considers policy recommendations for promoting gender equality.

German women played an essential role in the Nazi movement that outweighed the Nazi Party's propaganda that a woman's position was solely in the home as mothers and child-bearers. Thirteen million of the projected forty million German women in the Reich were active in Nazi Party organizations that promoted the regime's goals of racial purity, imperial conquest, and global war. The Nazi party was about as male-centered as any political party in history. Its ideas on women and women's rightful responsibilities in society were novel and, at best, radical. Despite this, the Party received widespread and active support among women in Germany at the time. This book investigates Magda Goebbels, Leni Riefenstahl, and Winifried Wagner and how they became enchanted by Hitler and obliged [his] Nazi philosophy. These three ladies were not ordinary Germans. Magda was hitched to Joseph Goebbels, the Reich Minister of Enlightenment and Propaganda and perhaps the most influential man of the Third Reich. An entertainer and famous movie chief, Leni was liable for a key publicity film. Winifred was hitched to author Richard Wagner's child and assumed responsibility for Wagner's inheritance. Hitler was captivated by every one of the women and used them to add his longing to reestablish Germany to its past brilliance. The women concurred with Hitler's longing to renew Germany's significance and perceived that once he became Chancellor, they would benefit enormously. These women didn't act as indicated by the standards of the times. They got out of the endorsed jobs relegated to ladies.

When Jennifer McGaha's grandmother was in her late eighties, Jennifer asked her what her favorite age so far had been. "Fifty-five," her grandmother answered, as though there were something magical about this stage of life. So, in her own fifty-fifth year, Jennifer began to take note. She jotted down her impressions of simple, everyday things that struck her as beautiful or humorous or intriguing and kept a list of all the accomplishments, large and small, that actually mattered to her.

These observations became Jennifer's Joy Document, a radical act of reclaiming joy and an exercise in paying attention. When you are determined to find joy, almost anything can become revelatory—an Earth Day Whole Foods errand, Claire Saffitz's fruitcake recipe, a harrowing ride in Twinkly Taxi, an evening picnic at Dvorák's Symphony No. 8, or cartwheels in the driveway. While many of us at midlife have found all the things we've strived for (the career, the better life, the organization tools), those things only go so far. And the search for something greater, something truer, begins. Life after fifty becomes not the end or even the middle of life, but a new beginning, another grand adventure with endless opportunities to find joy. The Joy Document includes fifty rollicking and often humorous essays exploring the art of joy and inspiring the rest of us to do the same.

As formally inventive as readers have come to expect from one of the most daring writers around, and as wild and tricky as its subject matter requires, Goblinhood: Goblin as a Mode  presents us with a series of essays and poems that playfully, artfully propound Jen Calleja's theory of 'goblinhood'——a theory that takes in all aspects of pop culture from film, tv, literature and art as well as the author's personal and original examinations of grief, lust, family histories and the physical fact of living in the world as it is.

Goblinhood  is a perpetually and variously curious, visceral addition to Calleja's remarkable oeuvre.
