Beschreibung

Harriet Martineau's "Society in America" (Vol. 1&2) stands as a seminal work in the field of sociology and social commentary, blending rigorous observation with an acute critical lens. Written during a period of profound transformation in American society, Martineau explores themes of democracy, gender roles, and social reform, deftly navigating the complexities of a nation grappling with its identity. Her incisive prose and keen analytical style not only illuminate the societal dynamics of the 19th century but also provide timeless commentary on the human condition, making the work an essential precursor to later sociological studies. Harriet Martineau, a pioneering figure in both feminist thought and documentary realism, was deeply influenced by her upbringing and her travels through the United States in the 1830s. A strong advocate for social change, her experiences as a woman writer in a male-dominated society provided her with a unique perspective on the injustices of her time. Martineau's commitment to abolitionism and women's rights is palpable throughout her work, reflecting her determination to challenge societal norms and engage with the pressing issues of her day. "Society in America" is not only a vital contribution to social sciences but also a rich narrative that invites readers to reflect on their own societal constructs. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding the roots of contemporary social issues and the evolution of American society through the perceptive eyes of one of its earliest observers.

STRESS HAS BECOME A FACT OF LIFE for far too many people today. Until now, the treatment of stress has mostly focused on behavioral changes, combined with talking about and noticing every thought, feeling, and sensation. But according to the metacognitive approach, this excessive focus on the self is what actually creates the problem. Worrying and ruminating are not simply a symptom of stress, but the causes of stress, preventing stress sufferers from fostering real change. Real change can only occur when the metacognitive management systems underlying behaviour are addressed by focusing not on what, but on how stress sufferers respond to their thinking. The thought is not important, but how they react to it, makes the difference.
This book comprises concrete examples of how a course of metacognitive therapy can be planned. The reader is invited into the therapy room to learn: how to apply the exercises of this method; what to remember during the therapy process; and which questions are important to ask the client. Metacognitive therapy is a part of the third wave of cognitive behavioural therapies and has shown promising results for clients with depression and anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety, social anxiety, PTSD, and OCD. This approach can also be helpful for stress sufferers. First and foremost, the client should learn that their thoughts do not create the problem, but, on the contrary, their response to them does. By applying metacognitive principles, the therapist or practitioner can help the client improve their cognitive management system at the metacognitive level, so that they can choose new and more effective strategies. The client has to reduce their worrying and ruminating before taking action on their actual problem.

A rich and vivid history of Britain's second city through the people who made it
‘What Manchester thinks today, England thinks tomorrow.’
Long before Manchester gave the world titans of industry, comedy, music and sport, it was the cosmopolitan Roman fort of Mamucium. But it was as the ‘shock city’ of the Industrial Revolution that Manchester really made its mark on the world stage. A place built on hard work and innovation, it is no coincidence that the digital age began here too, with the world’s first stored-program computer, Baby.
A city as radical as it is revolutionary, Manchester has always been a political hotbed. The Peterloo Massacre is immortalised in British folklore and the city was a centre for pioneering movements such as Chartism. Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst hailed from here and the city still treasures its wilful independence.
Manchester’s spirited individuality has carried through into its artistic output too, bringing the world Anthony Burgess, L.S. Lowry, Jeanette Winterson, Joy Division and Oasis. Mention United or City almost anywhere and you’ll find fans, and opinions.
Until now, this magnificent city did not have its definitive history. From the author of the bestselling Northerners, this work of unrivalled authority and breadth tells the story of a changing place and its remarkable people.
In this autobiography of a city, Brian Groom delves into the historical and social aspects of Manchester, painting a vivid picture of its evolution from the 19th century to the 21st. The non-fiction work is a testament to the city's popular culture, its influence on Britain and Europe, and its significant contributions to science.
For fans of Rick Broadbent (Jessica Ennis), Tom Holland (The Rest is History), Simon Jenkins (The Celts), Andy Burnham (Head North), and Ian Mortimer (Medieval Horizons).

In 2023, the Supreme Court made one of its most devastating rulings in environmental history. By narrowing the legal definition of "waters of the United States" (WOTUS), the court opened the floodgates to unregulated pollution. But while tremendously consequential, the decision was also simply the latest in a long series of battles over WOTUS, and which rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wetlands, and perhaps even farm fields were to be protected by the Clean Water Act of 1972.

Waters of the United States is an unprecedented exploration of this history—and its importance for today's efforts to conserve a critical natural resource. The book not only examines how bodies of water are legally defined (and therefore protected), but who gets to decide on these definitions. The result is a fascinating look at the ongoing power struggle between the president and federal agencies, the courts, the states, and Congress, over water quality.

Waters of the United States offers the detailed analysis necessary for any lawyer or environmental advocate to understand the nuances of water policy, while spinning a compelling narrative for listeners who have never cracked a law book. The unique mix of insights into environmental law, history, and politics is required for anyone who cares about the future of the nations water.
