Synopsis

In "Lady Byron Vindicated," Harriet Beecher Stowe crafts a compelling narrative that fiercely defends Lady Byron against the allegations of her character by her estranged husband, Lord Byron. Through a combination of thorough research, personal letters, and emotive prose, Stowe not only reconstructs the tumultuous relationship between the Byronic couple but situates it within the broader contexts of gender, honor, and societal expectation in the 19th century. Her literary style embodies the sentimentalism prevalent in her era while also incorporating elements of feminist thought, making it a powerful critique of the patriarchal structures that shape women's lives. Harriet Beecher Stowe, renowned for her groundbreaking novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin," was a prominent abolitionist and advocate for women's rights. Her own experiences with the injustices faced by women and marginalized individuals inform her portrayal of Lady Byron as a victim of circumstance and societal scorn. Stowe's exploration of personal integrity versus public perception reflects her commitment to social reform and her belief in the moral imperatives of justice and truth. This book is a must-read for scholars and enthusiasts of feminist literature and historical biographies. Stowe's meticulous examination of Lady Byron's life not only reclaims her from the shadows of history but also resonates with contemporary discussions on women's rights and social equity. Readers will find themselves challenged and inspired by this eloquent plea for justice.

This program is read by the author.“Compelling and brave, Kate’s story is a must read for all young women learning how to navigate adulthood and identity.” —Lili Reinhart, New York Times bestselling authorStrip Tees is a fever dream of a memoir—Hunter S. Thompson meets Gloria Steinem—about a recent college graduate and what happens when her feminist ideals meet the real world. At the turn of the new millennium, LA is the place to be. “Hipster” is a new word on the scene. Lauren Conrad is living her Cinderella story in the “Hills” on millions of television sets across the country. Paris Hilton tells us “That’s hot” from behind the biggest sunglasses imaginable, while beautiful teenagers fight and fall in love on The O.C.Into this most glittering of supposed utopias, Kate Flannery arrives with a Seven Sisters diploma in hand and a new job at an upstart clothing company called American Apparel. Kate throws herself into the work, determined to climb the corporate fashion ladder. Having a job at American Apparel also means being a part of the advertising campaigns themselves, stripping down in the name of feminism. She slowly begins to lose herself in a landscape of rowdy sex-positivity, racy photo shoots, and a cultlike devotion to the unorthodox CEO and founder of the brand. The line between sexual liberation and exploitation quickly grows hazy, leading Kate to question the company’s ethics and wrestle with her own. Strip Tees captures a moment in our recent past that’s already sepia-toned in nostalgia, and also paints a timeless portrait of a young woman who must choose between what business demands and self-respect requires.A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company.

Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, the fifth and final emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, ruled the Roman Empire from AD 54 to 68. He was thrust into the highest seat of power at the age of sixteen after being adopted by Emperor Claudius, his stepfather. While Nero enjoyed popularity among the lower classes and the Praetorian Guard, who benefited from his patronage, the Roman aristocracy and Senate viewed him with contempt. Ancient historians portray him as a tyrannical and self-indulgent ruler, notorious for his extravagance, cruelty, and disregard for tradition. His reign ended in disgrace when the Senate declared him a public enemy, leading to his suicide at the age of thirty.
Born in AD 37 in the coastal town of Antium, Nero was the son of Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus and Agrippina the Younger, a great-granddaughter of Emperor Augustus. His father died when he was only two years old, and his mother soon remarried, securing a position of influence at the imperial court. When Agrippina married Emperor Claudius, she maneuvered to have her son adopted as his heir, ultimately sidelining Claudius’ biological son, Britannicus. Following Claudius’ suspicious death in AD 54—widely believed to have been orchestrated by Agrippina—Nero ascended the throne with the backing of the Senate and the powerful Praetorian Guard.
In the early years of his reign, Nero was heavily influenced by a triad of advisers: his ambitious mother Agrippina, the philosopher and statesman Seneca the Younger, and the Praetorian prefect Sextus Afranius Burrus. Initially, the empire benefited from their guidance, as Nero enacted policies that were generally seen as moderate and pragmatic. However, as he grew older, he sought to rule independently, resenting the influence of his mother.

A rich, penetrating memoir about the author's relationship with a flawed but influential figure—the painter Lucian Freud—and the satisfactions and struggles of a life lived through art.

One of Britain's most important contemporary painters, Celia Paul has written a reflective, intimate memoir of her life as an artist. Self-Portrait tells the artist's story in her own words, drawn from early journal entries as well as memory, of her childhood in India and her days as a art student at London's Slade School of Fine Art; of her intense decades-long relationship with the older esteemed painter Lucian Freud and the birth of their son; of the challenges of motherhood, the unresolvable conflict between caring for a child and remaining committed to art; of the "invisible skeins between people," the profound familial connections Paul communicates through her paintings of her mother and sisters; and finally, of the mystical presence in her own solitary vision of the world around her.

Self-Portrait is a powerful, liberating evocation of a life and of a life-long dedication to art.

    Contains mature themes.
