Synopsis

In "Three Lancashire Plays: The Game; The Northerners; Zack," Harold Brighouse presents a rich tapestry of working-class life in early 20th-century England. Blending sharp humor with poignant social commentary, Brighouse's three plays unfold in the vibrant backdrop of Lancashire, exploring themes of aspiration, identity, and the intricate dynamics of community. His use of dialect and colloquial speech not only gives authenticity to his characters but also enriches the cultural context, inviting the audience to engage deeply with the struggles and triumphs of his protagonists. The plays reveal the complexities of northern English identity, showcasing Brighouse's masterful ability to interweave personal narratives with broader societal concerns. Brighouse, an influential playwright born in 1882 in Manchester, was deeply influenced by the social realities of his youth in industrial Northern England. His experiences amidst the working class, along with his literary encounters, shaped his perspective and commitment to portraying authentic voices. His works highlight the tensions between tradition and modernity, reflecting a transitional period in English society, particularly in the context of the burgeoning industrial landscape and its impact on community values. "Three Lancashire Plays" is a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of British theatre and the representation of working-class life. Brighouse's keen observation and profound empathy invite readers not only to laugh but also to reflect on the resilience of the human spirit. This collection is essential for scholars, students, and theatre lovers looking to explore the intricate relationship between regional identity and the universal themes of aspiration and belonging.

Dear listener, I bare you my heart like an olive tree bares its fruit in the Levant sun.
Written in both North Levantine Arabic and English, this is a poetry book on love as I have experienced it. I wrote it with a vision, an image of myself being back on the olive field where my late grandfather used to harvest ripe olives whilst I sat between the rocks and the olive trees.

Alexander Woollcott called Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, "the man who wrote the most enchanting nonsense in the English language." Besides his many stories, Lewis Carroll wrote nonsensical poems. Eleven of his poems appear here, the most famous of which being Jabberwocky, The Walrus and the Carpenter, and The Hunting of the Snark. Narrator Griffin Rogers recorded Jabberwocky as a Christmas present for his son before spending the next several years recording additional nonsense whenever he was able to find an unlocked window and sneak into a recording studio. (If that sounds like a lot of nonsense to you, you will love this audiobook - and so will your children.)

'I can change colours of objects by looking at them, hear the symphonies of household simplicities, taste the emotions in a room like sweet or bitter wine, and feel life's every heartbeat breaking through my ribcage in glorious technicolour. Just don't ask me to make eye contact.'
An imaginative child's glorious fantasies – of dolphins and dragonflies, gingerbread houses and chocolate rivers – offer him an escape from hostile reality.
When reality dictates he has to conform to the 'real world', he has to make a choice. Should he live authentically and risk stigma, or can he continue to hide?
Based on real events from the perspective of the writer and the autistic community, JJ Green's A-Typical Rainbow is an uplifting play about the experience of growing up neurodivergent and queer in early 2000s Britain.
It premiered at London's Turbine Theatre in June 2022, produced by Aria Entertainment, directed by Bronagh Lagan, and starring playwright JJ Green, who is a passionate advocate for autistic artists like himself.
This edition includes the full text of the play along with contributions from the largely – and proudly – neurodivergent cast and creative team.

this volume of the 10 volume series is subtitled "Tales of Horror and Death"
    - includes some of Poe's most famous works including "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Fall of the House of Usher" and 10 others
Acclaimed American writer, Edgar Allan Poe (1809 to 1849) was known particularly for his mysteries and tales of the macabre. He was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre.
Poe's father abandoned the family when he was just 1 year old and his mother died the following year. He was taken in by John and Frances Allan and lived with them into young adulthood. Poe attended the University of Virginia but had to leave due to lack of money. He quarreled with John Allan over the lack of funds for his education. In 1827, Poe enlisted in the United States Army under an assumed name and also published his first collection. Poe failed as an officer cadet at West Point, decided to be a full-time writer, and thus the relationship with the Allans was severed.
