Synopsis

The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen is one of the most beloved and enduring fairy tales ever written—a touching story about self-discovery, resilience, and the beauty of becoming who you truly are.

The tale begins on a quiet farm where a group of ducklings hatch from their eggs. Among them is one small bird who looks very different from the others. Larger, awkward, and gray instead of bright and fluffy, he is quickly mocked and rejected by the animals around him. Labeled strange and ugly, the lonely duckling is forced to leave the only home he has ever known.

As he wanders through fields, forests, and frozen landscapes, the young bird encounters hardship, loneliness, and cruelty. Everywhere he goes, he struggles to find acceptance and belonging. Yet through these trials, he quietly grows stronger and continues his search for a place where he might finally feel at home.

When spring arrives, the duckling discovers a group of graceful swans gliding across the water. Drawn to their beauty and elegance, he approaches them—only to realize a life-changing truth: he has grown into a magnificent swan himself. What once seemed like ugliness was simply the early stage of something extraordinary.

Through its gentle storytelling and powerful symbolism, The Ugly Duckling delivers a timeless message about patience, inner worth, and transformation. Andersen's tale reminds readers that true beauty often emerges through growth and perseverance, and that being different can ultimately become one's greatest strength.

Heartwarming and inspiring, The Ugly Duckling continues to resonate with readers of all ages. It is a story about hope, identity, and the courage to endure difficult moments while waiting for one's true self to unfold.

Something is amiss with the world's magic. Spells don't work the way they used to—when they work at all. Only the powers of the Crystal Mages remain as they were, powers founded on the use of the mystical element adamis, the harvesting of which has enslaved the peoples of the Twilight Lands. Ravenous beasts have begun to appear, legendary creatures that seem to be proof against any magic. And Clea Stylachos, granddaughter of a great sage of the Twilight people, has reason to fear that the Crystal Mages, instead of seeking to defeat these monsters, are attempting to weaponize them in their quest for power.

Clea's only hope to save her people is a wizard who retains his power, one who will not betray her. But that wizard—Ithrazel the Cursed—wants nothing to do with saving the world, helping a hero, or unraveling the terrible secret at the heart of the Crystal Mages' plans. Clea works to untwist the deadly riddles of magic and monsters—to free her mother's disenfranchised people from slavery under her father's conquering forces. To save her mageborn brother from the Crystal Mages' power; to control a sorcerer legendary for his deed of evil; to keep her own small band of friends one step ahead of her father's troops and the Crystal Order's spells. She is the Iron Princess, and she knows she must prevail or die.

When Loretta surrenders her young girls to the county and then disappears, she becomes one more missing Native woman in Indian Country's long devastating history of loss. But she is also a daughter of the Mozhay Point Reservation in northern Minnesota, and the mother of Azure and Rain, ages three and four, and her absence haunts all the lives she has touched—and all the stories they tell in this novel. In the Night of Memory returns to the fictional reservation of Linda LeGarde Grover's previous award-winning books, introducing listeners to a new generation of the Gallette family as Azure and Rain make their way home.

After a string of foster placements, from cold to kind to cruel, the girls find their way back to their extended Mozhay family, and a new set of challenges, and stories, unfolds. Deftly, Grover conjures a chorus of women's voices (sensible, sensitive Azure's first among them) to fill in the sorrows and joys, the loves and the losses that have brought the girls and their people to this moment. Though reconciliation is possible, some ruptures simply cannot be repaired; they can only be lived through, or lived with. In the Night of Memory creates a nuanced, moving, often humorous picture of two Ojibwe girls becoming women in light of this lesson learned in the long, sharply etched shadow of Native American history.

A ritualistic grave. A silent widow. A secret that refused to stay buried.

Wilhelm Jacobsson was a man defined by his friction - a stubborn, fiercely independent farmer who spent his life at war with his neighbors. But when he vanishes without a trace from the Gotland ferry, his silence becomes more dangerous than his words.

Days later, during the revelry of Gotland's Medieval Week, the festivities are shattered by a gruesome discovery. In the shadow of the ancient Iron Age ruins of Vallhagar, a dog unearths Wilhelm's body. He hasn't just been murdered; he has been staged in a 'chieftain's burial,' complete with a crushed snake at his feet - a symbolic warning from a killer who plays by ancient rules.

Detective Inspector Maria Wern, on Gotland for what was supposed to be a peaceful summer working vacation, is thrust into a community where the past is never truly dead. Wilhelm knew something that made him a target, and his widow, Mona, knows it too - but she isn't talking.

Under the scorching Baltic sun, Maria and her team must navigate a maze of local grudges and cryptic symbols. In a land of limestone 'rauk' formations and monastery ruins, the truth is within Maria's grasp, but it is wearing a mask she doesn't yet recognize. She has only days to unmask a killer before the ancient soil of Gotland claims another victim.

'The Silver Crown... is a page turner and that's that.' - The Police Magazine

'Anna Jansson has a depth in her thrillers that other authors lack. Her empathy and finesse are unique. When she ties together all the threads it's thrilling from page one. The books about Maria keep getting better and better.' - Länstidningen Södertälje Sweden
