Synopsis

The years between 1789 and 1815 saw the collapse of monarchies, the rise of revolutionary ideals, and the emergence of a new political order that would define modern Europe. In Revolutionary Europe, 1789-1815, first published in 1897 and now republished by Classicus, historian H. Morse Stephens provides a compelling and deeply researched account of this extraordinary period, tracing the forces that reshaped an entire continent. From the fall of the French monarchy and the upheaval of the Reign of Terror to Napoleon Bonaparte’s sweeping military conquests, Stephens captures the events that shattered the old world and built the foundations of a new one.     The book follows the dramatic transformation of France from an absolute monarchy to a republic consumed by internal struggles, where ideals of liberty and equality soon gave way to radicalism and political violence. Stephens explores the rise of the Jacobins, the execution of Louis XVI, and the wars that erupted as revolutionary France challenged the great European powers. Against this backdrop of turmoil, Napoleon Bonaparte rose to prominence, seizing control of France and turning its revolutionary energy outward. His campaigns, marked by brilliance and ambition, reshaped the balance of power in Europe, toppling dynasties and spreading revolutionary principles even as he built an empire of his own.     Yet this era was about more than just military conquest and political upheaval. Revolutionary Europe, 1789-1815 examines the deeper transformations that took root—new ideas of nationalism, shifts in governance, and the codification of laws that would influence generations to come. Stephens provides a clear analysis of how revolutionary thought challenged traditional hierarchies and how the Napoleonic era forced Europe’s rulers to confront the realities of popular sovereignty and reform. Even as Napoleon fell and the old monarchies were restored, the world that emerged from this period was fundamentally changed, setting the stage for the revolutions and conflicts that followed.     Engaging, authoritative, and rich in detail, Revolutionary Europe, 1789-1815 remains an essential resource for understanding the political and social transformations that defined the late 18th and early 19th centuries. With a historian’s depth and a storyteller’s eye, Stephens reconstructs a time of extraordinary upheaval, when Europe was reshaped by revolution, war, and the relentless struggle for power.

The author of the groundbreaking New York Times bestsellers Girls & Sex and Cinderella Ate My Daughter now turns her focus to the sexual lives of young men, once again offering ""both an examination of sexual culture and a guide on how to improve it"" (Washington Post).
Peggy Orenstein’s Girls & Sex broke ground, shattered taboos, and launched conversations about young women’s right to pleasure and agency in sexual encounters. It also had an unexpected effect on its author: Orenstein realized that talking about girls is only half the conversation. Boys are subject to the same cultural forces as girls—steeped in the same distorted media images and binary stereotypes of female sexiness and toxic masculinity—which equally affect how they navigate sexual and emotional relationships. In Boys & Sex, Peggy Orenstein dives back into the lives of young people to once again give voice to the unspoken, revealing how young men understand and negotiate the new rules of physical and emotional intimacy.
Drawing on comprehensive interviews with young men, psychologists, academics, and experts in the field, Boys & Sex dissects so-called locker room talk; how the word ""hilarious"" robs boys of empathy; pornography as the new sex education; boys’ understanding of hookup culture and consent; and their experience as both victims and perpetrators of sexual violence. By surfacing young men’s experience in all its complexity, Orenstein is able to unravel the hidden truths, hard lessons, and important realities of young male sexuality in today’s world. The result is a provocative and paradigm-shifting work that offers a much-needed vision of how boys can truly move forward as better men.

Contrary to popular sentiment, Christianity is not dull or out of touch but fresh, relevant, exciting, and contemporary. The Church is political because it tells a radically different story from the dominant political norms of our day. Through a study of the Church’s liturgy, this book seeks to build confidence in the Church’s mission.

Politics & Mission examines five pieces of liturgy—namely morning prayer, baptism, eucharist, footwashing and the funeral—detailing in turn the ways in which the language of the liturgy, which we often take for granted, is powerful and counter-cultural. Through its analysis, the book sheds light on three principal areas: what it is to be human, the challenges of contemporary mission, and the particular way in which the Church is political.

In so doing, new resources are offered for the practicing Christian, those in Church leadership, and those looking at the Church from the outside, to reflect on and grapple with the challenges of this generation.
