Synopsis

The collection 'The Blind Lion of the Congo' immerses readers in a tapestry of exploration and adventure within the African wilderness, resonating with themes of survival, human courage, and the untamed beauty of nature. The anthology transcends mere storytelling, pulling readers into a range of literary styles depicting both the thrill of exploration and the raw, unfiltered life of the Congo. Diverse in approach, this compilation teems with vivid narratives, each contributing to a collective map of the emotional and physical landscapes of one of the world's most complex regions. Among the standout pieces, the intricate depictions of human interactions with this formidable environment offer a refreshing perspective that is both enlightening and engaging. Bringing together the creative prowess of Elliott Whitney and H. L. Sayler, this anthology offers a unique juxtaposition of perspectives from two prolific contributors to adventure literature of their time. Their works, rooted in the early 20th-century milieu, vividly reflect the era's curiosity and romanticized understanding of 'uncharted' territories. The inclusion of their voices together creates a dialogue that is richly informed by historical context and inspired by a desire to unveil the mysteries of the Congo. Collectively, their contributions highlight the literary movement towards exotic storytelling intertwined with realism. ' The Blind Lion of the Congo' serves as an essential resource for those eager to explore the vast spectrum of literary narratives centered on adventure and the human condition in extreme circumstances. Readers are invited to delve into this collection for an expansive journey through time and space, offering both educational insights and captivating narratives. With its rich interconnection of themes, styles, and cultural backgrounds, this anthology invites readers to experience the adventurous spirit that not only entertains but also encourages a deeper reflection on nature and exploration.

An original deep history of the internet that tells the story of the centuries-old utopian dreams behind it—and explains why they have died today

Many think of the internet as an unprecedented and overwhelmingly positive achievement of modern human technology. But is it? In The Internet Is Not What You Think It Is, Justin Smith offers an original deep history of the internet, from
the ancient to the modern world—uncovering its surprising origins in nature and centuries-old dreams of radically improving human life by outsourcing thinking to machines and communicating across vast distances. Yet, despite the internet’s
continuing potential, Smith argues, the utopian hopes behind it have finally died today, killed by the harsh realities of social media, the global information economy, and the attention-destroying nature of networked technology.

Ranging over centuries of the history and philosophy of science and technology, Smith shows how the “internet” has been with us much longer than we usually think. He draws fascinating connections between internet user experience,
artificial intelligence, the invention of the printing press, communication between trees, and the origins of computing in the machine-driven looms of the silk industry. At the same time, he reveals how the internet’s organic structure and
development root it in the natural world in unexpected ways that challenge efforts to draw an easy line between technology and nature.

Combining the sweep of intellectual history with the incisiveness of philosophy, The Internet Is Not What You Think It Is cuts through our daily digital lives to give a clear-sighted picture of what the internet is, where it came from, and where it might be taking us in the coming decades.

The 1980s. A time of fear: fear of the unknown, fear of your neighbours, fear of drugs, fear of sex, fear of strangers, fear of videos, and the very real fear that the world would end at any moment in an awful, and very sudden, nuclear attack. However, in those times of turmoil and worry, there was a comfort that soothed the mind, and acted as a quiet balm: action movies. Video shops were bursting at the seams with rampant gunfire, sex, drugs, rock, roll, cars on fire, people on fire, guns, bombs, and people dressed in army fatigues (and that was just the staff). Heroes were born shrouded in fire and violent revenge, they were not only armed with guns, but also red-hot quips, that served as a muscly arm around the shoulder, and a wink that everything was going to be okay. So thank you Arnold, Sylvester, Sigourney, Bruce, Eddie, Charles, Patrick, Mel, Chuck and everyone else that made it happen. You saved the world, in your own inimitable way. Join John Rain, the author of the critically-acclaimed Thunderbook: The World of Bond According to Smersh Pod, as he examines a choice selection of the greatest action movies from the decade when the explosion was king.

Historic True CrimeThe long forgotten true story of two convict "assigned" servant girls, Sarah 18 y/o & Mary 20 y/o, tried in colonial Australia for the murder of their “master”. All the people are real. All court testimonies are real. The blatant unfairness of the trial was also very true. The deceased, Captain Waldron, was a retired army Captain, then gentleman farmer and magistrate. The police investigator, Capt. Allman, was Capt. Waldron's friend, also an ex-army officer from the same regiment and a fellow magistrate. The judge, Burton, was ex-navy. There was no inquest, autopsy or death certificate. There were no marks or bruises on the head of the deceased . The witnesses except for the widow and her 12-year-old son saw no punches, allegedly the cause of death. The attending doctor did not arrive in time to give evidence. Hearsay evidence was admitted. There were no witnesses for the defence. The defence counsel, Rowe, was soon after struck off for pocketing witness expenses. The defendants were not allowed to testify. The jury was seven serving military men and took just 15 minutes deliberation before the verdict. The handwritten transcript of the trial was only recently uncovered. The media of the day called it the most sensational trial Australia had ever had. The verdict caused near riots on the streets of Sydney. The police contingent guarding the girls had to be reinforced. The trial led to such outrage that the government had to intervene. The government referred the case to the King. Three years later the British House of Commons initiated an enquiry into the Transportation of convicts and status of Australia, especially the "assigning" of convicts to private masters, such as were Sarah and Mary. They were effectively slaves. The committee chairman, Molesworth, delivered the final report in 1840. The chairman then moved the motion that would change Australia forever. Queen Victoria by proclamation ended Transportation to NSW a few months later.
